Our Challenge

Economic Inequality and a Changing Workforce

The Washington, DC region continues to prosper: a booming economy, low unemployment, world-class universities. Yet, our underserved young people continue to be left behind, facing staggeringly higher unemployment rates and poverty indicators than their more privileged peers.

Meanwhile, a generation prepares to retire, and Washington, DC region employers seek to invest in young, local talent. Half of all positions filled in the next five years will require some postsecondary credentials, but less than a bachelor’s degree and many of these positions are being left empty and with no pipeline.

Within these challenges lies our opportunity. We can and must work together to open access to sustaining careers and financial security in our region, so ALL of our young people can apply their creativity, energy, and talent to contribute to and take part in our region’s bright future.

Our response

Enter New Futures

We start by disrupting our national conversation about the four-year path through college; we are the only regional organization emphasizing associate degrees and other shorter-term certifications as the best first steps to in-demand careers.

Next, we are laser-focused on the supports and skills that help underserved students overcome barriers and that level the playing field for young workers.

And, we are collaborative. New Futures has coalesced networks of Community and Corporate Partners working hand-in-hand to support Scholars in their pursuit of the American Dream.
