Chief Executive Officer championing equitable educational and career access and success

Last week, New Futures closed for our first Community Care Week. I know it might not sound like a big deal, but in an age where organizations are grappling with employee engagement, wellness, and mental health, it was an important move for us. We wanted to signal that our staff, our greatest asset, can only do their jobs effectively when they are fully present. What does that mean? It means that they are more rested and renewed, and have regained some capacity to be creative contributors to our mission and Scholars. And this is the smallest thing we can do. Working in the nonprofit sector is incredibly fulfilling, and while many view it as charitable work, there are millions of people who devote an exorbitant amount of time to these social causes, and too often, they are worked beyond exhaustion. We have to shift the system. As Tricia Hersey wrote in her book "Rest is Resistance," "When we don't take our own rest while holding space for others around us to rest, we are functioning like the systems we want to gain freedom from." This is just a modest step in reexamining how we work while achieving impactful results. I hope to see more organizations , OF ALL TYPES, prioritize the care of their teams and communties. #communitycare #RestisResistance #newfutures #EmployeeWellness #Nonprofit

We had a great turnout this Thursday at Capital Hall One for our Northern Virginia Regional Lunch & Learn, the first of three planned events designed to engage our community of donors, partners, and volunteers from across the DMV. Thank you to our host at Capital One, New Futures Board Member Jeff Oberstein, and thank you to all who attended! CEO Dr. Sherrod Williams emphasized, "Our DC address doesn’t dictate our presence here – it's about the relationships we are building, the partnerships we are forging, and the lives we are touching." Iqra A., a New Futures Scholar, spoke about the impact of our financial scholarship, which has allowed her to accelerate her college journey since joining our program in Spring 2023. 📚✨ Attendees enjoyed a catered lunch, learned about New Futures' impact, and networked with professionals from Northern Virginia. This event underscores our dedication to connecting with communities beyond DC. Looking forward to our next Lunch & Learn events in Prince George's and Montgomery counties -- stay tuned for details! 📅 #LunchNLearn #NoVa #CommunityImpact
