FINANCE AND BENEFITS COORDINATOR

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

Nebraska Appleseed is a nonprofit organization that fights for justice and opportunity for all Nebraskans. We take a system-based approach to complex issues – such as child welfare, immigration policy, affordable health care and poverty – and we take our work wherever we believe we can do the most good, whether that’s in the courthouse, at the Capitol, or in the community. The organization is located in Lincoln, Nebraska. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Finance and Benefits Coordinator is responsible for bookkeeping and maintenance of the financial records of the organization, including tracking income, expenses, assets, liabilities, and grants with donor restrictions. The position manages logistics for the hiring and onboarding process for new employees and processes benefit enrollments and changes. The position reports to the Administration Sr. Director and serves on the organization’s Administrative Team.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Record daily financial transactions of the organization 
  • Track use of restricted funds by grant 
  • Reconcile bank accounts and credit card statements monthly and monitor documentation of all expenses
  • Reconcile various asset and liability accounts monthly
  • Perform month-end journal entries (e.g., depreciation, prepaid expenses)
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Support bookkeeping for one related organization and the various organizations that Nebraska Appleseed fiscally sponsors
  • Manage new enrollments, open enrollment periods, and general administration of employee benefits programs 
  • Maintain knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and accounting software.  Make recommendations for accounting efficiencies and updated procedures.
  • Collaborate with hiring manager and Administration Sr. Director in managing hiring and onboarding processes
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • Ensure work is aligned to the goals of the Administration team and the strategic objectives of the organization

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE POSITION

The ideal candidate will have the following background, or a combination of the following qualifications:

  • High attention to detail and accuracy is required
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines at one time
  • Ability to work independently, with limited supervision
  • Ability to work within a team to proactively assess needs
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Knowledgeable in financial accounting
  • Highly proficient in Google Suite (email, calendar, Google Docs, Google Sheets) and Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with Quickbooks Online is a plus
  • At least one year of related experience, preferably in nonprofit accounting
  • Completion of background check

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary range of $48,000 to $60,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes health, vision, and dental insurance with single coverage paid at 100% by Nebraska Appleseed; 401(k) with a 4% match; and generous paid leave including vacation, sick leave, holidays, and longevity leave. Nebraska Appleseed is a flexible and hybrid workplace.

After five years, employees receive a two-week paid sabbatical to take time off to explore and pursue their personal endeavors. Every five years after that, employees receive a four-week paid sabbatical.
