State departments of transportation (DOTs) face considerable challenges in implementing, enhancing, or replacing their existing maintenance management systems (MMSs). These processes are not only expensive and time-consuming but also involve considerable risk, because these systems have usually been in place for many years.

NCHRP Synthesis 629: Practices for Capturing and Integrating Cost Data in Maintenance Management Systems, from TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program, documents current DOT practice for capturing maintenance costs in an MMS, including a look at the level of detail captured, the quality of the data, the level of integration with other agency systems, and the operational and business value of the data.
