Our 2022 report says that categorizing traumatic brain injury (TBI) as "mild, moderate, or severe" promotes bias that can limit care. “In today’s world of precision medicine, one could not imagine classifying cancer as ‘mild, moderate, or severe’ for its diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis,” said Donald Berwick, chair of the committee that wrote the report. “Implementing improved approaches for classifying TBI would allow for more personalized care for patients, better ongoing monitoring of their condition, and more successful translation of therapies from research to the clinic.” To learn more, visit https://ow.ly/pIB350SuCVn. #TBI #BrainInjury #Neurology

As president of University of Maryland Baltimore County for three decades, Freeman A. Hrabowski III has led pathbreaking initiatives to make scientific and technical disciplines more diverse. In a recent interview for Issues in Science and Technology, he discusses the importance of the humanities, culture change at universities, and scientists’ involvement in civic life. "If we are simply creating techies who can only work with the technology, we’re in big trouble. We need people who can think about the increasingly important role of technology and look at the big ethical and philosophical questions that we’ll be facing as we go through this next period in our development as a society." Climate-smart farming practices can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the U.S. agricultural sector and absorb carbon emitted by other sectors of the economy, but these practices are not yet the norm. A recent National Academies webinar explored how to expand the use of climate-smart agricultural practices, including planting cover crops and no-till farming. Wastewater surveillance was a valuable component of the public health response to COVID-19, helping to identify the changing levels of a pathogen or new variants within a community. Our recent report recommends further development and continued investment in wastewater-based infectious disease surveillance to strengthen nationwide coordination and ensure a national wastewater surveillance system that is flexible, equitable, and sustainable. “U.S. science is perceived to be — and is — losing the race for global STEM leadership,” said National Academy of Sciences President Marcia McNutt at the inaugural State of the Science address this Wednesday. However, she expressed confidence that the nation can counter that trend by adapting its R&D model to the emerging research environment. “Our country has a remarkable ability to adapt, and to learn, and to try new things.” During the address, McNutt recommended a range of actions to protect and strengthen U.S. global leadership in science — including improving K-12 science education to expand the domestic STEM workforce, modernizing university-industry research partnerships, and developing a national strategy to coordinate research. Complementary feeding refers to the introduction of foods other than human milk or formula to the diet of an infant or young child under age 2, and it is critical to establishing a strong foundation for lifelong health. A recent National Academies report explores interventions that can help support healthy feeding practices in settings such as health care, WIC, other federal nutrition assistance programs, cooperative extension, home visiting, and early care and education. Our new digital resource provides guidance for professionals working in these different settings on how to help caregivers make informed decisions about complementary feeding.
