Café Flesh
Director: Stephen Sayadian
1982 / 76min / DCP
Debuting in 1982, Sayadian’s arthouse sci-fi porno immediately stood out upon release for its graphic sexuality and bold playfulness. Regarded by many observers as a withering satire of the culture of voyeurism cultivated by the porn industry, with Sayadian aka Rinse Dream’s post-apocalyptic vision of a world in which 99% of the surviving population have been reduced to “Sex Negatives” who, incapable of copulating themselves, gather in the titular club to watch the few remaining “Sex Positives” go at it in dutifully mechanistic fashion. A singularly chilly, visionary fuck-flick, boasting Expressionist art direction, avant-garde staging, and a brittle, steely synth score by noted music producer Mitchell Froom.
Restored in 4K from the only two remaining 35mm copies, one held at UCLA, the other at the Kinsey Institute by Mondo Macabro
Featuring a pre-recorded presentation by director Stephen Sayadian on Saturday, July 20th
