1. Explained: millimeters of bone meme

    • The term “incel” stands for “involuntary celibate”. It typically refers to men who complain that no one wants to have sex with them.
    • The opposite of an incel is typically considered a Chad. Chads are considered attractive and able to get sex.
    • The millimeters of bone meme involves presenting an image of an incel version of a person next to an image of a Chad-ified version of the person. The images would have a caption that states the only difference between a Chad and an incel is a few millimeters of bone, referring to ways in which the facial structure of the typical Chad differs from that of a typical incel.
    • This meme appears to have its origins in /r/Incels, a subreddit that serves as a “support group” for incels.
    • A common practice on the subreddit is to do “morphs” in which users would have images of incels photoshopped to look more Chad-like.
    • Incels on the subreddit have often complained that with a “few millimeters of bone”, they could have been Chads.
    • For example, a Reddit post from 6 February 2017 titled, “Morphing yourself is brutal” states, “You can seen that with a few millimeters of bone here and there, you would have been chad.”
    • Similarly, a Reddit post from 22 July 2017 states, “Because of millimeters of bone (face and/or height) some men are condemned to a life of loneliness and depression.”
    • Soon a meme emerged that mocked these morphs that compared the incel with the Chad-ified version, especially because these morphs would affect more than just a “few millimeters of bone.”
    • For example, on 15 August 2017, a post on /r/Incels compared an “incel” Squidward with a “Chad” Squidward.
    • The meme seems to have crossed over to Tumblr in September 2017 and has continued to be popular in October 2017.
    • In one version of the meme, instead of Chad-ifying, this example with Todd Howard shows an incel-ified version of him for comparison.
    • EDIT (29 Oct 2017): Know Your Meme now has a submission (archived link) on the meme and has traced the origin of the meme to a tweet from 21 August 2016.
