Reinventing Media Business Forum reposted this
Earlier this week, Federica Cherubini, Sebastian Katthöver and I got to lead a conversation on change management in legacy newsrooms at the excellent Reinventing Media Business Forum at Centre for Media Studies at SSE Riga. (Yes, any non-profit, mission-driven media organization is a business, competing for audience attention and funding.) Some of my learnings from this conversation: ➡️ Federica shared the 8-step change model by John Kotter, that starts with creating a sense of urgency and coalition building: https://lnkd.in/eM48-Py5 ➡️ Sebastian spoke to implementing the Objectives and Key Results framework on a platform level to maintain cohesion in teams transitioning to new platforms: https://lnkd.in/eFdpDDBh ➡️ We asked this smart audience of media managers about their challenges in change management and what has worked for them in their newsrooms. Below are the word clouds of their answers. TLDR: Culture, data, communication. Thank you, Dace Lamberte for hosting us, and introducing me to the work of Shira Jeczmien, Andreas Bengtsson, Rawan Damen, Alyona Nevmerzhytska and Charles Minty. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is still hiring in our new hub in Riga. If you're interested in working for this diverse public media organization, don't hesitate to get in touch with Elmars S., Kristaps G., or me. Full list: https://lnkd.in/emcdnDvC Also, I am so grateful to our Latvian partners for inviting me back for the Rīga Conference later this month to speak on the news media's role in curbing digital authoritarianism. If you're there, get in touch. Link to my slides in the first comment.

Reinventing Media Business Forum reposted this
The end of this year’s Reinventing Media Business conference, in Riga. Shorter day today, but still comprehensive with topics around subscription models and social media competetive analysis. However, for me the AI part of today’s session was the most interesting. Grzegorz Piechota, researcher at INMA, shared insights and ideas on how to navigate through the age of AI. One thing that was specifically insightful, was the suggestion that instead of asking: What can AI do for us?”, ask ourselves: What do we need AI to do for us?” Where are our needs, where we can use AI to help us be better and more efficient? And begin by investigating our own customer and work flows. #RMBF2023 #media #innovation

Mental resources tend to run out under pressure, continued stress or simply overload. As managers we cannot fully control the mental state of our team members, but we can certainly make an effort to support them. Join us in Riga and hear the case of the The Kyiv Independent, Ukraine based English-language media outlet, founded just three months before Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, as its CEO Daryna Shevchenko is detailing the efforts and sharing the experience of its managements team.
