Earlier this week, Federica Cherubini, Sebastian Katthöver and I got to lead a conversation on change management in legacy newsrooms at the excellent Reinventing Media Business Forum at Centre for Media Studies at SSE Riga. (Yes, any non-profit, mission-driven media organization is a business, competing for audience attention and funding.) The end of this year’s Reinventing Media Business conference, in Riga. Shorter day today, but still comprehensive with topics around subscription models and social media competetive analysis. However, for me the AI part of today’s session was the most interesting. Grzegorz Piechota, researcher at INMA, shared insights and ideas on how to navigate through the age of AI. One thing that was specifically insightful, was the suggestion that instead of asking: What can AI do for us?”, ask ourselves: What do we need AI to do for us?” Where are our needs, where we can use AI to help us be better and more efficient? And begin by investigating our own customer and work flows. #RMBF2023 #media #innovation

As news media industry braces for the next wave of disruption enabled by AI, let us analyse the potential impact on news consumers, subscribers and advertisers, your media firm, and your individual work. In this presentation, International News Media Association (INMA) Researcher-in-Residence Grzegorz Piechota will discuss how predictive and generative AI redefines the business model, strategy and operations in news media firms.
