POTAS: Farewell To Ben Sasse

by

Today is a sad day for me, and that is because one of the best elected officials in our country is stepping down. Ben Sasse, the junior senator from Nebraska, resigned today in order to take on a new role as the president of the University of Florida.

Sasse was a rarity in the Senate, someone who was motivated by a genuine desire to do what was right.

Not only were his motivations pure, Sasse understands the dysfunction of our federal government better than anyone. He has long criticized the legislature’s refusal to legislate and the executive’s attempt to fill that void. Few understand the symbiotic relationship of checks and balances between our three branches of governments better than Sasse, and fewer can articulate it as he does.

I think that this video of Sasse, taken from Justice Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing back in 2018, is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. It’s a great watch for all who appreciate Sasse as I do.

No doubt will Sasse go down as a polarizing figure within the conservative movement due to his opposition to President Trump. Rather than oppose Donald Trump in a self righteous and self-serving manner, like Liz Cheney and Adam Kissinger, Sasse remained principled and opposed Trump without using it to elevate his own personal brand.

Although I will miss Sasse in the Senate, there is great value in conservatives taking prominent positions within other institutions, higher education being one of them. I trust that Sasse will continue to promote intellectual diversity, and a commitment to free speech, both of which are under attack within American higher education. Conservatives must work from within these institutions to ensure the survival of the conservative movement for future generations. Nonetheless, the Senate is worse off with his departure.
