[Meet] Prof Irvy (Igle) Gledhill, Visiting Adjunct Prof: School of Mechanical, Industrial & Aeronautical Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand. She is a finalist contending for the NSTF- South32 Science Diplomacy for Africa Award, proudly sponsored by the Science Diplomacy Capital for Africa initiative of the Department of Science and Innovation and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Professor Gledhill works for improved workplace and research conditions for both women and men. She has led the international working group on Women in Physics and was in leadership within the Global Gender Gap Project, especially standing up for African connections. As Vice-President of the Network of African Science Academies, she assisted in convening African scientists to tackle wicked problems. Physicists in Africa have lacked awareness of each other’s work, and she helped found the African Physics Newsletter which connects them. It was a great honor to witness the progress and achievements of the Lesotho Academy of Science and Technology (LAST). Dr. Makhamisa Senekane (PhD) presented on "Effective Communication Strategy for Science Academies" during the second quarterly webinar in the Academy Development Initiative (ADI) series, organized by NASAC on June 13, 2024. LAST, established in 2020 with the support of the UN Technology Bank and Network of African Science Academies, has made significant strides in fostering scientific advancement. Their journey, supported by both technical and financial assistance, is a testament to the power of collaboration in science. The Academies Development Initiative (ADI), launched in 2020, has seen the establishment of four academies in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Lesotho, and Malawi. This initiative aims to increase awareness of the value of science academies in Africa, inspire scientists to create them in countries where none exist, and facilitate capacity building and peer-to-peer learning among senior and new academies, national young academies, and representatives in the process of establishing science academies.
