The inaugural Africa Climate Summit brought together delegates from different sectors to discuss the challenges of climate change and explore solutions. We spoke with Ali Mohamed, the Special Climate Envoy for Kenya. We discussed the aftermath of the Summit, and what its outcomes mean for Africa's position on future climate negotiations. United Nations' Africa Industrialization Day calls attention to the importance of inclusive growth and sustainable development in countries across the continent of Africa. Demetria Giannisis represented the Trienens Institute at the inaugural Africa Climate Summit in September. At the Summit, she engaged with prominent regional and global leaders who developed the historic Nairobi Declaration on Climate Change. The Declaration calls for new approaches to multilateral climate financing based on equitable monetization of the sustainable use of Africa’s natural assets as a part of the continent’s contribution to global decarbonization. Africa faces severe climate change impacts such as drought, desertification, and extreme weather events. Meanwhile, the continent claims to be ready to contribute to global climate action and decarbonization efforts. In September 2023, African heads of state convened at the first-ever Africa Climate Summit. The Summit served as a platform to inform, discuss, and share about accelerating Africa's economic development while contributing to global decarbonization efforts. Africa remains the most affected continent by the global #climatecrisis, adding a considerable drain on its public finances and growth trajectory. Off-grid bottom of the pyramid access to finance therefore remains essential to achieving #sdg7 (Affordable & Clean Energy) in the continent. 🌍 During the Africa Climate Summit 2023 in Nairobi, George Mudhune, our Head of Wholesale and Partnerships highlighted that while finance mobilization from international public sources is critical, complimenting efforts are needed from the private sector to fill the massive climate financing gap.
