Creative Hybrid Chemistry For a Better Tomorrow

概要

Sumitomo Chemical has its origins in the Sumitomo Fertilizer Manufactory, which was founded to resolve the air pollution problem caused by Sumitomo’s copper smelting operation at the Besshi Copper Mine (now Niihama, Ehime Prefecture, Japan). Air was cleaned by removing the sulfur from the copper ore and the company used sulfur to manufacture fertilizer. Founded to overcome environmental problem and improve agricultural production at the same time, Sumitomo Chemical has inherited the Sumitomo Spirit, proving itself worthy of society’s trust and the credo, “Our business must benefit society at large, not just our own interests”. Both principles have been passed down to us over generations since our inception. Under these principles, Sumitomo Chemical responds to the changing needs of time, develops a diversified portfolio of businesses, and enriches people’s lives through constant technological innovations.

Sumitomo Chemical is proud to announce that we have received the prestigious 23rd Green Sustainable Chemistry (GSC) Awards, including the "Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award" and the "Minister of the Environment Award," from the Japan Association for Chemical Innovation (JACI). This marks the second time in history that an achievement has been honored with two ministers' awards simultaneously.   We were recognized for our development and dissemination of CFP-TOMO®, an easy-to-use tool for calculating the carbon footprint of chemical products, addressing the complexities of their manufacturing processes. By providing CFP-TOMO® free of charge, we aim to support the industry's efforts towards a carbon-neutral society. The tool has been widely adopted, with 111 companies using it as of May 2024, and positive feedback from users highlights its effectiveness.   This is our fourth GSC award. Stay tuned for more innovations from Sumitomo Chemical. For more information, please visit our website. https://lnkd.in/gEFUuJzh #sustainability #LCA #CFPTOMO

We're excited to announce our latest innovation in the fight against global heatwaves: HYO-GEKI α (Ice Blast for global market), cooling wear! Our groundbreaking product combines the fabric made of the world's first*1 solid polymer-based temperature control material, "Comformer®️" by Sumitomo Chemical, with the world's top-level technology Cool Touch Printing by Utax Co., Ltd. As record temperatures continue to rise, our commitment to creating a cooler, more sustainable world has never been stronger.   We challenge the cooling gear market, which will be a must-watch market in Japan and abroad moving forward, with Japanese cooling technologies. Set to hit the Japanese market in late June 2024, we're also aiming at overseas markets. *1 As of the announcement on May 21, 2024, this is the only commercially available olefin resin, according to research by Sumitomo Chemical.   Stay tuned for a future where we turn the heat down and the innovation up, all while keeping sustainability at the forefront of our efforts.   News release: https://lnkd.in/gCW4eiBk   #Innovation #Sustainability #CoolingTechnology

Recently, Sumitomo Chemical and 東京工業大学 have successfully achieved two innovative results. 1.miniaturization of multiferroic materials, which has been technically challenging. 2.discovering high-efficiency photocatalytic function in multiferroic materials.   These results are expected to make a significant contribution to the development of next-generation environmental technologies. The group of materials that have a strong electron-electron interaction is called strong correlation materials. They are expected to be utilized in next-generation memory devices that can operate with ultra-low power consumption, energy harvesting devices that efficiently convert ambient energy, such as light and heat, into electric energy, and environmentally-friendly water purification systems. Since April 2023, the Company has been working on collaborative research projects with the University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology, and RIKEN. Sumitomo Chemical believes that strong correlation materials are a next-generation essential technology that can contribute to both energy saving and generation. Sumitomo Chemical is committed to the green transformation (GX) of its business portfolio and the realization of carbon neutrality through the development and commercialization of innovative technologies for reducing environmental impacts. In Tokyo on May 22, 2024, we, in furtherance of the above GX commitments, entered into license collaboration agreements with Lummus Technology, a global provider of process technologies and value-driven energy solutions, to license and commercialize “Sumitomo Chemical’s highly efficient poly methyl methacrylate recycling (rPMMA) technology.” The rPMMA technology was jointly developed by Sumitomo Chemical and The Japan Steel Works, Ltd. and is a highly efficient technology for depolymerizing and recycling acrylic resin into MMA monomer, a raw material for acrylic resin. The pilot facility built by Sumitomo Chemical at its Ehime Works in Japan in December 2022 is operating and produces the same quality of MMA monomer made with a fossil-based conventional MMA process whilst projected to reduce GHG emissions by about 60% over the entire product life cycle. With Lummus Technology's global marketing reach and engineering capabilities, our licensing collaboration on the innovative PMMA chemical recycling technology allows us to reach a wider customer base and provide technology-based solutions that contribute to reducing environmental impact and addressing the global challenge of resource conservation and carbon neutrality.   #carbonneutrality #chemicalrecycling #circularsystem #PMMA   Read more for our information: https://lnkd.in/gbWmTvxP https://lnkd.in/gtpK9-Nh   See our previous related posts here: https://lnkd.in/gy5-_UUd
