Research data

Open data

Bioscientifica strongly encourages authors to publicly release all data supporting the analysis and conclusions of primary research articles, on or before publication date of the article. The data may be included as supplementary data to the article, or deposited on a publicly available repository

If choosing a public repository, authors are recommended to select:

  • A repository that meets the FAIR principles of data sharing – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable;
  • A repository that issues Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) as this helps to facilitate persistent linking to the dataset from the research article and the future citability of the data;
  • A repository that has been widely adopted by their research community (if possible). If not, general public repositories are also available.

Authors may find more information on repositories and data sharing formats at www.FAIRsharing.org or https://www.re3data.org/.

Access to research data during peer review

If the data is not already publicly available, editors and reviewers are entitled to request access to underlying data and code when needed to perform their evaluation of a submitted article.

Data Availability Statements

All submitted primary research articles must include a Data Availability Statement in their article. The Data Availability Statement should either:

  • Provide readers with information on how to access the data, or
  • Confirm why the data is not publicly available.

Examples of Data Availability Statements

  • All data supporting the findings of this study are available in [repository name], at https://doi.org/[DOI].
  • All data supporting the findings of this study are available within the article and its Supplementary Materials.
  • The data underlying this article cannot be shared publicly due to [describe why the data cannot be shared]. The data will be shared on reasonable request to the corresponding author.
  • No new data were generated or analysed in support of this research.

Citing Data

In addition to providing a Data Availability Statement, Bioscientifica encourages authors to cite any publicly available research data that support the findings of the article in their reference list. The citation should follow journal style and include a persistent link enabling readers to directly access the data.
