Piaggio Aerospace has completed the final testing campaign for the innovative composite wing developed under the European co-funded research project Clean Aviation (OPTICOMS project) A composite wingbox, an integral 7-meter “fasteners free” architecture using primary bonding for assembly, has been designed and manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries in collaboration with DANOBATGROUP, Coriolis Composites, and Techni-Modul Engineering. The bonding assembly has been monitored with an innovative Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system developed by CIRA - Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali. A static test has been carried out at Piaggio Aerospace’s labs in Villanova d’Albenga, where the test rig was implemented to simulate the operational loading conditions of the wing. The test demonstrated the full capability of the wing to withstand the static loads and the maturity level of the SHM system. OHB Italia S.p.A. @ 47th AEROSPACE MECHANISMS SYMPOSIUM At the Virginia Beach Convention Center, #MatteoSpinelli, Head of Thermostructures of our Equipment Business Unit, presented an interesting #paper on the Retention and Separation Subsystem of the #LARES2 Mission.   The LARES2 (LAser RElativity Satellite 2) System, developed by OHB Italia, under the flag and the coordination of Agenzia Spaziale Italiana - ASI, was launched on 13th.07.2022 at 03.13 p.m. (CET time) from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guyana. It was the first passenger on the new AVIO launcher VEGA C on its maiden flight. After ten years from the launch of the first LARES, the same winning team has well performed again. LARES2 is the main scientific payload, for which OHB Italia built the #PlatformSystem and the #ReleaseMechanisms which kept the LARES2 satellite locked in place during launch and released it once in orbit. Scope of the mission is to measure the #FrameDragging effect, a distortion of space-time caused by the rotation of a massive body such as the Earth, as predicted by the General Relativity Theory.   The spherical passive satellite is made of high-density nickel alloy, on which 303 #retroreflectors have been installed, making it a perfect reflecting target for the #ILRS (International Laser Ranging Service). Thanks to the laser measurements, the satellite orbit will be tracked with great accuracy and will consent to verify certain #relativisticlaws theoretically predicted by Einstein, but also to perform measurements in the field of space #geodesy.   OHB Italia at the Symposium, organized from the #MechanismsEducationAssociation, was highlighted as a first-range “non-conventional space mechanisms” producer. On Monday June 3rd, SVP Innovation in FINCANTIERI Paolo Cerioli and our VP Research & Innovation in VARD Håvard Vollset Lien, spoke at the International Conference on Nuclear Shipping about the shipbuilder perspective when considering nuclear energy as the ship propulsion solution of the future. 🚢   Håvard Vollset Lien comments: “Nuclear propulsion is the only true zero-GHG-emission energy source for deep sea shipping in the medium to long term. More importantly, it will not occupy shore energy sources for production of fuel in the way the hydrogen-based fuels will, and is by far the alternative that requires the least amount of material and requires the least land area. This makes it not only a zero-emission alternative, but also the most sustainable alternative in the wider environmental perspective. As a ship design and shipbuilding group, we follow the development of nuclear technology closely to understand when we can start consider this option as a commercial alternative." #shipbuilding #maritimeindustry

TT-Sense® - propeller Thrust & Torque sensor In view of the propeller and ships hull performance measurements, the propeller thrust is of special interest, as this measurement allows for a split in performance between propeller and hull. The TT-Sense® sensor can be mounted on propeller shafts between the propeller and the thrust bearing. When a shaft is subject to thrust and torque this results in a small compression and torsion of the shaft. The working principle of the TT-Sense® is based on measuring this shaft compression and torsion over a shaft length of typical 200 [mm]. This relative long measuring area of the shaft, compared to for instance strain gages, highly increases the measurement accuracy. LED’s and extremely accurate optical sensors detect the small displacements over the shaft length, in both axial and tangential directions, corresponding to the compression (thrust) and torsion (torque) of the propeller shaft. The measured values of thrust and torque are transferred continuously from the rotating shaft to the stator part through wireless data connection with a 100 Hz transfer rate. Power transmission from the stator to the rotating shaft is performed by means of induction. The stator part consists of a power transmission coil, a data signal receiver and a control box equipped with digital or analogue output connections.

Could CFD help you achieve EEXI and CII compliance? Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD can show exactly which energy-saving devices and improvements will work best together to achieve compliance with EEXI and CII regulations. The CFD image shows a non-ideal situation. The red, turbulent area means that the water does not flow smoothly towards the propeller. The water flow needs to be improved. This will increase efficiency and reduce the amount of power needed to move the vessel through the water. One way to achieve this is to install a pre-swirl stator on the vessel’s propeller. It will create an optimal inflow for the propeller by guiding one side of the stern flow in the opposite direction to the propeller rotation – generating a pre-swirl. For example, Wärtsilä’s EnergoFlow solution generates a pre-swirl with its multiple curved fins and a ring attached to the hull to prevent power losses from the propeller’s slipstream. A pre-swirl stator can improve propulsive efficiency by 2–7%. The emission savings help the vessel comply with regulations. With the fuel and emission savings, a stator can pay itself back in just one to two years. 🌊 #CFDmethodology #OptiDesign
