    Why are we so reluctant to adopt automation? According to our VP of Product Frans, it is because hoteliers are often afraid to challenge the norms and previous standards of service. They worry that people will react badly - and we get it! In a world where customer loyalty can be lost quickly, and staff often don’t stick around, it can be scary to try something new.     Your maintenance team and housekeeping team: name a better duo. Get their relationship right, and you’ll keep your guests happy and safe, and your hotel in tip-top condition. Get it wrong, however, and you’re looking at a poorly maintained property which isn’t pleasant - or safe - for your guests. The key to this relationship? Communication. It’s no longer good enough for housekeeping to make a note about any repairs on a piece of paper at the end of the day. There’s a huge room for human error on both sides - plus, it leaves repairs waiting to be tended to for hours or even days. The solution? Use a task management system to aid communication. We know a good one if you’re looking 😉 Housekeeping will be able to capture issues in seconds and maintenance will be able to easily find them, and fix them.     Did you know that 30% of travellers are willing to pay more for a hotel with eco credentials? Reducing your reliance on single-use plastic does require an upfront investment. But do it well, and you could save money in the long run: 👉Make the switch from single-use plastic toiletry bottles (one of the hospitality industry’s biggest culprits) to refillable bottles, and save by ordering refills in bulk. Plus, it stops guests from taking unused bottles home as a souvenir. 👉Show off your eco credentials, and you’re making sure your hotel stands out from the competition and positions itself as a more premium brand. Plus, you’ll be keeping up with industry giants like Mariott and Hyatt. 👉You’ll also have the opportunity to market your hotel in new channels, such as the Hotelbeds Sustainable Hotels Program, which gets your property in front of new potential guests. Doing your bit for the environment and an improved bottom line? Yes please.

    150 million. That’s how many tonnes of single-use plastic the global hotel industry generates every year 🤯 Think about it: you’ve got straws and stirrers in your bar, toiletry bottles and earbuds in your bathrooms, water bottles and laundry bags in your rooms…just to name a few. We don’t need to tell you that single-use plastic is bad for the planet - but it’s also bad for the impression you make on your guests, with 80% now viewing sustainable travel as important. This post isn’t all bad news, though. Your guests care about single-use plastic usage - so ask for their help! Here’s how: 👉Ask them for feedback: tell them that you want to reduce single-use plastics, and see what suggestions they have. You might be pleasantly surprised! 👉Offer incentives: for example, offer to plant a tree (Hotels for Trees) or give a voucher for a drink at the bar in return for opting out of housekeeping. 👉Make your efforts public: let future guests know about your initiative, and give them the option of bringing reusable water bottles or their own toiletries if they’d like to help.  What would you add to the list?     We don’t need to tell you... Hiring hotel staff is really, really tough at the moment. Struggling to fill your open positions? Run through this checklist of different places to find good people: 1️⃣Your hotel: is there anyone due for a promotion, or ready to take on new responsibilities? 2️⃣Your hotel staff’s connections: can anyone make a referral? Tip: you can build this into a referral programme with an incentive for anyone who recommends a successful candidate. 3️⃣Your local university: students are often cash-poor and time-rich. Perfect for that difficult-to-hire-for position you haven’t managed to hire for. 4️⃣Social media: you can’t expect people to know you’re hiring if you don’t shout about it. If a potential applicant doesn’t see the post, someone who knows them might. 5️⃣Your network: ask others who do your job. People love to help other people, and you’ll feel confident about anyone you’re introduced to. #hospitalitytech #hiring #staffing

    ❓ How can we keep our hotel staff satisfied and engaged This might seem like a tall order, particularly in the face of a staffing crisis. But don’t worry - we’ve got you. Let’s take a look at some of the key areas to focus on: 💰SALARY: there’s a global economic downturn, and prices are high. Pay your staff fairly, or they might have no choice but to leave. If you’re struggling to raise salaries, employee benefits or other package sweeteners could help. 📚PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: give your people something to work towards, and they’ll be more motivated to stay and give the job their all. This could be a training opportunity, a promotion, or the chance to take ownership of a new initiative. 🤝WORKING ENVIRONMENT: build a positive culture for your staff to enjoy. That means keeping things inclusive, giving your team regular time to meet (professionally and socially), and making sure working hours don’t get out of hand. In case you didn’t know, plastic-free July is a thing - and as a #green choice hotel tech advocate, we’re fully on board with the initiative. Want your hotel to get involved? Start by thinking about where you might have plastics in your hotel, and how you might reduce them: HOTEL ROOM: water bottles, toiletry bottles, earbuds, laundry bags PUBLIC SPACES: cups, straws, stirrers BACK OF HOUSE: packaging, plastic cups, single-use wipes, plastic gloves You can also introduce water fountains throughout your hotel, for example, and encourage guests to use them to reduce their water bottle usage.
