Archaeological excavations carried out in recent years at the site of Santa Margarida (L’Escala) ... more Archaeological excavations carried out in recent years at the site of Santa Margarida (L’Escala) are part of the current research project promoted by the Empúries section of the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya, which aims to study the ancient port areas of the Greek city of Emporion and the Roman city of Emporiae. The results of these works provide new arguments about the location of the Late Antique episcopal complex of Empúries in this area, as well as evidence relating to some of the buildings that made it up, such as the baptistery and the basilica or funerary church. A new settlement developed around this episcopal complex that, according to recent paleolandscape studies, was located next to the estuary of the river Ter, which then flowed immediately to the North of Sant Martí d’Empúries, the other main nucleus in this historical period.

This plombarius had his workshop in the city of Arelate (Arles, Provence), and it’s the first time that one of its frames has been documented in Hispania. In this paper we analyse the mirror and its archaeological context, probably related to a domestic cult area.

Its peculiarity is especially evident, in that it is the only case in the Iberian Peninsula where there was a Greek city on the site before the Roman one. This was, without a doubt, a determining factor, in the same way as were all the political and military actions related to Empúries from the Second Punic War onwards. M. Porci Cato’s campaign, at the beginning of the 2nd century BC, against a coalition of Iberian peoples and the creation, shortly afterwards, of a fortified military installation next to the ancient Greek nucleus, were the main events prior to the new urban foundation in the upper part of the Emporitan hill, which occurred in the first quarter of the 1st century BC. The dense Emporitan historiography, based on classical sources and archaeological evidence, has been complex and has led to various interpretations. The archaeological data we have available to us today from the various sectors of the city lead to the foundation being dated between the years 90‑75 BC. However, there are still large areas of its urban layout to explore. In this nucleus, Caesar left legionnaires from his army, possibly to refound the city as a colony. Later, the Municipium Emporiae, created in the Augustan period, united the Greek and Roman cities in a single enclosure, which evolved until the abandonment of the site at the end of the High Empire.

It is a fortified enclosure subsequent to the military presence in the area during the Catonian era that dates from the end of the first quarter or the beginning of the second quarter of the second century BC, when Empúries would once again operate as a port for movement of Roman troops and supplies. This installation was active for at least half a century, probably during the Celtiberian Wars (181-133 BC), until the end of the third quarter of the second century BC, when it ceased to be used. Evidence from the deepest levels of the excavation of Insula 30 provide new information about the Iberian cultural identity of at least some of the troops and, to a lesser extent, the presence of Gallic individuals.

T... more The origin of the Roman city of Emporiae dates back to the first quarter of the 1st century BC. The Roman presence in the extreme northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, however, had begun long before. The small Greek city of Emporion, an ancient Phocaean foundation from the 6th century BC, had until then fulfilled the functions of an urban nucleus and an active port enclave. Its position as an ally of Rome and the port conditions of its coast favoured the military actions that took place in this area in the context of the Second Punic War, first, and in the repression by M. Porcius Cato of the revolt of the indigenous populations of the territory, a few years later. The creation of a new city with an orthogonal plan, following Roman models, took place at the beginning of the1st century BC. The creation of the municipium Emporiae must be placed, however, at the beginning of the Augustan period. Topographically, this plural municipium included both the Greek and Roman urban nuclei through the construction of a diagonal wall that united the two enclosures and represented the legal unification of its inhabitants.

For the Roman period and based on their characteristics, these assemblages have been classified as butchery deposits, raw material deposits, deposits created for the hygienic management and disposal of animal carcasses, or ritual deposits. However, some are difficult to classify, and the parameters that define each of them are not clear. Here, we present a unique deposit from the Roman villa of Vilauba (Catalonia). A total of 783 cattle remains were found in an irregular-shaped 187 m2 pit originally dug to extract the clay used in the construction of the villa walls around the third quarter of the 1st century AD. The application of a contextual taphonomy approach, with the integration of archaeozoological variables, stratigraphy and context, and a GIS analysis, allowed us to document the nature and formation of this singular assemblage. It consisted of the carcasses of 14 cattle individuals from which the meat had been removed to take advantage of it by preserving it. Therefore, the parameters that characterise the refuse of this activity are presented here as a baseline for other studies.

The 2014 dig on the Insula 30 of the Roman city of Emporiae brought to light a set of 18 denarii, five of which were from the Iberian workshop of Bolskan and 13, Roman, the most modern from the Lugdunum Mint, dated between 2 B.C. and 4 A.D. Also at the Empúries site, a further four treasures concealed between ca. 74-73 B.C. and the reign of Augustus were found, thanks to which it is possible to make an appraisal of the characteristics of silver coin circulation throughout this period.

Amphorae are not everything. Dolia and the production of antiquity ABSTRACT The large ceramic vessels we know as dolia were part of the equipment of Roman plantations and, though a structural element, have received little attention from archaeological research so far, unlike amphorae, on which economic studies have been built because these are the better known element for the transport and marketing of food products, especially wine. Dolia, however, also played an essential role, from fermentation to storage of wine in cellae uinariae. These storage devices make it possible to estimate the productive capacity of estates, in addition to other possible functions. Intrinsically, the vessel carries implicit typological and modular aspects in relation to its capacity which provide objective data. Also, there are a number of symbols that provide complementary elements, relating to their manufacture, ownership and capacity. Latin epigraphical seals can provide important information on the families involved.

the Roman city of Emporiae. The results of these works provide new arguments about the location of the Late Antique episcopal complex of Empúries in this area, as well as evidence relating to some of the buildings that made it up, such as the baptistery and the basilica or funerary church. A new settlement developed around this episcopal complex that, according to recent paleolandscape studies, was located next to the estuary of the river Ter, which then flowed immediately to the North of Sant Martí d’Empúries, the other main nucleus in this historical period.

all the political and military actions related to Empúries from the Second Punic War onwards.
M. Porci Cato’s campaign, at the beginning of the 2nd century BC, against a coalition of Iberian peoples and the creation, shortly afterwards, of a fortified military installation next to the ancient Greek nucleus, were the main events prior to the new urban foundation in the upper part of the
Emporitan hill, which occurred in the first quarter of the 1st century BC.
Later, the Municipium
Emporiae, created in the Augustan period, united the Greek and Roman cities in a single enclosure, which evolved until the abandonment of the site at the end of the High Empire.

levels of the excavation of Insula 30 provide new information about the Iberian cultural identity of at least some of the troops and, to a lesser extent, the presence of Gallic individuals.
