In my personal experience over the last six years, working as SDE in a startup, at an established company, and a sillicon valley giant, and then running my startup, I found that engineers who are extremely good at writing optimized code and solving DSA problems are better at implementing the real stuff too and are overall better SW Engineers. This is compared to those who are just good at specific stacks like React / MERN or Django, or those who use jargon and draw diagrams in system design interviews. There is a reason why big tech companies in Silicon Valley still ask about DSA even for senior positions.

Why did Zerodha make the shift to Golang? The answer lies in the significant advantages that Goroutines in Go offer over Java threads. Goroutines are lightweight, efficient in memory usage, and have low context switching costs, making them perfect for high-concurrency scenarios such as trading platforms. In comparison, Java threads consume about 1 MB each, while Go goroutines start with only 2 KB, enabling millions to run concurrently without draining system resources. The Go runtime scheduler effectively manages goroutines, reducing overhead and ensuring optimal CPU utilization. Moreover, Go's built-in channels streamline synchronization and communication between concurrent tasks, enhancing code safety and reducing complexity. In conclusion, Go's concurrency model and performance characteristics position it as a superior choice for real-time data streaming and high-performance applications.

Debugger. A Coder friend. A good friend. Back when we all started, I started in C++. Just cin, cout was sufficient, I didn't find someone using a debugger it even if I take a sneak peak of their window from the side. Then Javascript happened and console.log became the new friend. As a developer or as a human we have the tendency to not try new things when things are working cha cha smooth. Then, you work in industry and there is huge code base, you may have to see the embarassing query result, change on the fly and then printing statements is replaced by a good debugger which comes built-in with a good text editor. What a combo !! Then everything keeps working good and then one day you think how debugger works ? With debugger you can watch variables, change variables literally play around like a 5 year old in the code sand, so how the debugger program can access the other program, the running program context, its memory access. The answer is ptrace. ptrace is a system call found in Unix and several Unix-like operating systems. By using ptrace (an abbreviation of "process trace") one process can control another, enabling the controller to inspect and manipulate the internal state of its target. ptrace is used by debuggers and other code-analysis tools, mostly as aids to software development - wiki. I also have some faded memory of using gdb which is quite famous debugger for C++ which was developed by Richard Stallman. Once upon a time, doing POC was a scary thing to me, lots of uncertainty and questions from various Architects, Seniors, Managers etc. 🥲 But now, POC is the best thing for 1. Showing your efforts 2. Getting quick feedback for better design and quality 3. Knowing other people's perspective 4. Getting ideas from them that can improve me as a software engineer and product wise as well If you are a fresher and afraid of speaking in front of larger audience, trust me, such proof of concept and demo activities make you a better software engineer 🙂 I myself at times feel boring due to writing documents but when I explain technical stuff to POs, PMs and other team's people, life becomes very easy, they won't have time to go through your code in 30 minutes call. But is it comforting when users are browsing the site and toggling between pages multiple times, especially on a site like Airbnb? Such intense animation will surely cause discomfort to motion-sensitive people. Especially for a travel app, when users are walking or moving in a vehicle if they constantly see these animations for a long duration, they may experience motion sickness. 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱? In my opinion, animations are beneficial when you are trying to convey an experience or tell a story about your product. However, if your website or app provides a large catalogue of items where users are expected to browse through many options before making a purchase, then it is not a good decision to have animations on your website. Be very particular when adding animations to your website. While animations might enhance the look and feel and make your site very appealing, they might also impact the overall interactive time on your website, which you definitely want to increase. Some supporting research says: 1. 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘆𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 (𝗗𝗘𝗦): Prolonged use of digital screens, including viewing animations, can lead to digital eye strain (DES), characterized by symptoms such as dryness, irritation, blurred vision, headaches, and difficulty focusing. This is especially prevalent among individuals who use computers and smartphones extensively. 2. 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆: Users with motion sensitivity can experience discomfort and even nausea from intense animations. This is particularly problematic for applications used in dynamic environments, such as travel apps, where users might be on the move and more prone to motion sickness. 3. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆: Digital eye strain affects comfort and reduces productivity and accuracy in tasks performed on digital devices. Don’t spend all your time solving LeetCode problems to chase a 20% pay bump. Instead, invest in the 👉 Relationships, 👉 Technical expertise, and 👉 Communication skills That will transform you into an engineering leader. The greatest returns in your career will come from these investments compounding over time. Not from get-rich-quick schemes designed to maximize short-term profits.

HTTP 429: Rate Limited Exceeded! How to solve that? . . . Most of the SMS/Email providers like (SendGrid, Twilio) enforces a rate limit on their clients, so that people don't end up abusing their API. As abuse can devalue their reputation in eye of Network Service Provider or the Email service provider. e.g. Gmail gives every inbound email sender a reputation score and if this reputation scores fails to cross a certain threshold, it simply marks the email as spam. Nobody on earth wants that for their email. Understood! But How to implement this rate limit? The actual issue is that, we can't send request above the rate limit meaning we won't be able to entertain a big chunk of requests immediately. A trivial Solution: Keep a global count of request ready to dispatch, if this count exceeds the imposed rate limit, hang all the incoming requests until the count comes back below the threshold. But that means, we would keep our client (requester) hanging until we are able to process his request keeping the rate limit in mind. The Solution: The Load Level Pattern Instead of making Synchronous requests to the SMS/Email dispatcher service, We can put all the requests in a queue and let the dispatcher service process that on a steady speed. Simple!
