Hey engineering leaders and the CTOs, I can recommend a great article from Gergely Orosz and David Singleton about Stripe's engineering culture, where you can gain some insights. Here are the main points from the article: Stripe's Diverse Product Offerings: While often viewed as a payments company, Stripe considers itself the "financial infrastructure of the internet" with four core product groups: Payments, Connect, Stripe's financial stack, and Revenue and finance automation products. Financial Success and Valuation: Founded in 2009, Stripe has raised $2.2B in funding up to 2023 and executed a $6.5B secondary market raise. The company was valued at around $50B in March 2023 and processed $817B worth of payments in 2022. Engineering Workforce and Locations: Stripe employs around 7,000 people, including thousands of software engineers. Engineering hubs are situated in San Francisco, Dublin, Seattle, Bangalore, Singapore, and other major cities. Remote Engineering Hub: Stripe established a "Remote Hub" in 2019, recognizing the importance of remote work. This hub functions coequally with physical hubs and includes dedicated engineering teams, demonstrating the company's commitment to a global talent pool. Full Stack Engineering: About 70% of engineers work in a hybrid setup, and 30% work fully remote. Full stack engineering is predominant at Stripe, with engineers commonly working on both backend and frontend aspects. Specialized Engineering Roles: While full stack engineering is common, there are specialized roles, including ML engineering, security, native mobile (iOS and Android), and other disciplines reflecting the diversity of a larger tech company. Operating Principles and Culture: Stripe's culture is defined by operating principles grouped into "How we work," "Who we are," and "Leaders." Principles include "Users first," "Move with urgency and focus," "Curious," "Humble," "Elevate ambitions," and "Set the pace and energy." Remote Work Emphasis: Stripe champions remote engineering and has been investing in remote-friendly practices. The company's writing-heavy culture has been beneficial in supporting remote work, and it continues to experiment with hybrid models. Dual Career Track: Stripe has a dual career track for software engineers and engineering managers. Engineers can transition between individual contributor (IC) and management roles based on their preferences and interests. Planning and Internal Mobility: Planning is a continuous process at Stripe, with a biannual cadence for heavier planning. Internal mobility is encouraged, and engineers are expected to deliver meaningful work on their own teams before changing roles.
