The talks on design maturity, design ROI, design systems, design operations, design leadership—these serve merely as a salad on the table. The main course is lost somewhere in Figma, overhyped stakeholders, discovery synthesis that is shelved now, and in the underrated and dusted micro-systems that rarely get a chance to see the design light in real sense. And this salad shows in our digestion system—we consume what we cultivate. As long as there is a struggle of versus—production vs maintenance, or profits vs people, or sales vs systems, our investments in innovation will continue to be part of the misplaced hype. We lack the confidence to admit that we lack confidence. Are you a Hedgehog or a Fox ? 🤔 One of our design jam kicked off with this 2600-year old popular dichotomy which was popularised by Isaiah Berlin. We were in the middle of crafting our quarterly goals and that’s when Priyank Sharma shared about this theory to help us envision better. This concept states that the fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.” In essence, foxes are versatile, finding various clever strategies to navigate the world. A fox, faced with danger, uses its wit and resourcefulness to escape. In contrast, hedgehogs focus deeply on one effective strategy, mastering their single approach to excellence. It relies on singular and effective defence to curl into a spiky ball. The Hedgehog Concept isn’t about aspiring to be the best through sheer will or meticulous planning. Instead, it’s about understanding what you can truly excel at. Reflecting on this, theory suggests that we can ask ourselves three pivotal questions: 1. What are you deeply passionate about? 2. What can you be the best in the world at? 3. What drives your economic engine? Applying this concept to our lives and work, we can strive to identify our unique strengths and passions, focusing our efforts where we can truly stand out and make a significant impact. Whether we see ourself as a hedgehog or a fox, understanding this distinction can help us navigate our path to success. Ways of working — It all starts with own experience for designers and why it matters In large organisation, It’s imperative for designers to work closely with different teams in business, product, engineering, data science, analytics etc… Each function becomes matured and agile in silos. That’s essential but not enough. Recently I learnt that System (Organisation) is not just sum of its parts (Functions) but product of their interactions. In order for system to function effectively and efficiently, each of its part need to work well by own and also handover their contribution (by interactions) to connected parts. Out of curiosity, I started exploring… (1) Where should designers see themselves in this eco-system? (2) Why should organisation give designers, a needed space for bigger impact and better ways of workings? (3) How can designers become positive change makers (with tools & processes) that is truly aligned with various teams and common goals? Inspired by Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, I was able to conceptualise diagram for Experience hierarchy — Going from outputs to users outcomes and business impact. My LinkedIn profile describes me as a successful design leader, but that's not even half of the story. Behind the scenes is a rollercoaster of job rejections, lack of self confidence , financial setbacks, navigating industry switch, balancing college and freelance assignments and countless lessons on professional and interpersonal skills with each year. Learning to be a good manager was totally another feat. The most challenging of it all was seeking an entry into the product design field while studying graphic design from National Institute of Design, two totally different things but here I was, pushing the boundaries! All of these shaped me into who I am today. From self-support to enduring over 15+ interviews in preparation for Product Design opportunity, All I was doing was striving for more. Now I realise nobody has all the answers, even if it may seem that way. So just believe in yourself and put in your best efforts. Pushing ahead is the only key to this game. My advice to anyone starting their career journey is to stay in the present and give your best efforts to achieve what you really believe you can :) #productdesign
