Excited to be delivering a keynote address at this Webinar on Bio-Mobility - Towards Decarbonizing the Transport Sector, hosted by Indian Federation of Green Energy - IFGE.. Bio-mobility has somehow become synonymous with biofuels in the transportation sector. In actual fact, there are four separate high level approaches to decarbonize the transport sector: (a) Improve the overall energy efficiency of operating assets in the transportation value chain - these assets could be the vehicles themselves or their production processes and supply chains. This is the lowest-hanging fruit! (b) Reduce the materials resource efficiency and the associated product carbon footprint of components in the transportation value chain. Use more recycled materials while ensuring rigorous analysis and reporting of Net Energy Ratios, Life Cycle GHG emissions and water footprint of the recycled constituents. This approach potentially has the best planetary value, to the extent new resource extraction from the earth can be brought down sensibly. (c) Replace fossil-derived fuels and lubricants with bio-based fuels and lubricants - but, again, ensure that life cycle sustainability aspects of bio-based mobility are critically evaluated against the incumbent that each new offering seeks to replace. This is where most of the action appears to be as of now (and it has to be a key component of net-zero energy transition efforts) - but the required rigour and reporting transparency is not yet sufficiently visible. (d) Encourage large transportation-origin GHG emitters to take ownership of all their wastes - not just their emissions - through CCUS activities, market measures such as carbon credit purchases, and extended producer responsibility for all end-of-life consumables and assets. Link these initiatives to develop local and hyperlocal bio-economies. This direction of effort is likely to minimise the in-use and post-use environmental burden of the sector's activities on the planet. More on these four points during my talk tomorrow. Human activity, sometimes well-meaning but without deep prior understanding of possible consequences, can have unexpected outcomes on urban climate-health systems. Here is one case study reported from India, where decline in avian scavenger populations - eventually attributed through research studies to "improved" treatment for domesticated bovines - has been implicated as a possible cause for increase in rabies and other vector-borne diseases in India. Moral of the story - deep science and strong interdisciplinary consultation networks for evidence-based interventions are critical to addressing core issues of sustainable development. Some numbers to bring out the fiscal challenges related to the green transition. - State and Central government revenue (direct and indirect) from fossil fuels account for over 3% of GDP - This is higher than the entire defence budget of India (2% of GDP) The transition to a carbon-free world is not only a technological challenge but also a huge fiscal challenge. While our Net Zero target might seem really far away (2070), kicking the can down the road is not an option.

The summer heat poses significant challenges for street vendors, impacting both their health and livelihoods. Spoilage of food items is very common for vendors selling cooked and uncooked food. The peak summer heat often coincides with a decline in customer traffic, as potential buyers may opt to stay indoors to avoid the heat. The home-based workers who work from their own homes also incur additional costs during excessively hot months. Transportation costs for work delivery and buying raw materials increase. Elevated electricity bills, due to the need for additional cooling facilities like coolers and excessive use of fans further cuts into the family income. Often it is difficult to work during the hot hours of the day, so the workers have to reduce work hours, thus affecting productivity – nearly by 50% in many instances. In addition, there is reduced productivity due to the excessive heat and the discomfort associated with it.

"The carbon market's effectiveness in emission reduction in India will depend on its regulation and implementation in the context of the target of Viksit Bharat by 2047 and Net Zero by 2070". - Economic Survey 2023-2024 The Economic Survey raises two important points of "regulation" and "implementation", in the context of the effectiveness of #CarbonMarkets and #VoluntaryCarbonMarkets. But how do we translate it into action? 1. The "Voluntary" nature of Carbon markets should not mean that they are above the law or exempt from EIA/SIA. 2. VCM should be monitored and regulated at the level of the DM at the districts. All projects and their details should be known to the DMs. 3. Visibility of projects and their details to all stakeholders and to academics, research orgs and media. Non-disclosure Agreements should not be a hindrance towards creating transparency and accountability. - Climate projects are public projects. 4. Community-led, governed, and maintained standards for carbon projects are need of the hour. 5. Communities should not be looked at as mere "beneficiaries" of carbon projects but have to looked at as the "producers" of the environmental good, bringing them on top of the value chain instead of pushing them at the bottom where there receive peanuts. If you're curious about how the climate finance landscape is in India, this report is for you. Let's break it down together. 📊 The report outlines financing strategies to meet 1.5ºC or 2ºC targets, focusing on India's climate action. ⭐ This report stands out for its thorough examination of India's climate finance landscape, analyzing both domestic and international funding sources. With well-researched insights and extensive citations, it fills critical gaps in climate finance literature with valuable data. 📉 Failure to act on climate change could result in significant economic losses, with projected GDP per capita decline of 2.6% by 2030, 6.7% by 2050, and a staggering 16.9% by 2100. ⚙ Sector at Risk:Health, Agriculture, Labor productivity, and infrastructure 💰 Investment Requirements: To achieve India's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets, annual investments of USD 167 billion (8% of GDP 2015) are required from 2016-2030. 🌱 Adaptation Finance: The cost of adapting to climate impacts in India is projected to reach a staggering INR 86 trillion by 2030.
