Celebrating Pride Month with PeriFerry! 🌈 Reflecting on my journey as a volunteer with PeriFerry over the past 18 months fills me with immense pride. Through PeriFerry's Crafted Wings initiative, which fosters sustainable livelihoods for transgender individuals, I had the privilege of teaching stained glass mosaic art to these talented artists. Witnessing the transfer of a craft I've cherished for over a decade was deeply fulfilling. Each artwork, whether it depicted a lighthouse or a serene landscape, brought us all tremendous joy. This week, that joy turned into something even more profound—the artists successfully exhibited and sold their first eight pieces of art! (Proud teacher moment!) "I started my journey in 2015 when I was an employee at a firm where I first learned about the LGBTQI+ community, their experiences, the challenges. I took up a small project to explore how I can be of help and of support as an ally and as a volunteer. In a year's time, I grew passionate about that project and decided to take it further. I quit my job and spent six months trying to learn things from the community on the ground. I started PeriFerry in 2017, working with the trans community to create inclusive job opportunities. We are here to promote financial independence within the community and ensure that all transgender people can lead an independent life. To date, we have created jobs for over 530 transgender people. Our work impacts the larger society as well because of our efforts in creating awareness, sensitization, and culture-building within organizations. We've sensitized close to 70,000 corporate Indian employees. I don't think everybody needs to do anything grand to be an ally. You don't need to quit your job and start a organization or run a massive volunteering event. Just accepting people the way they are, or standing up when someone's bullied or made fun of, also is a mark and a sign of an ally. You can just be an ally if someday somebody in your family comes out, you treat them just the same as you did before. Showing up as an ally matters, so that somebody who might feel that they're not worthy or that they should not exist because of their identity or their sexuality, can feel accepted and loved. There's no perfect way to be an ally. Just do the right thing. Be kind, be respectful. You don't need to understand everything. You don't even need to know what each identity of the LGBTQIA+ community means. It was a double blast of fun, learning, celebrations, and inclusive affirmations with IKIGAI Music Fest. coupled with Pride Experience Zone! The Experience Zone kickstarted the day at Barclays with interactive learning games like Guess Who, Connections and more. It was already getting packed thanks to an enthusiastic audience and then our artists from the LGBTQIA+ community started their performances in the IKIGAI Music Fest. You feel proud when you see the beats and the dance move the audience and each artist get loud ovations after their performances! Take for instance, Vanitha. She was there after a very long struggle with discrimination even from her parents who discouraged her from following her passion in the Bharatnatyam dance just out of their fear of her true identity. For Abby and Prajwal their performances told the stories of finding love and solace as a queer person. This is the magic of IKIGAI Fest. - its art, artists, and allies celebrate people as they are.
