Empowering remote off grid remote Communities

About us

The 20th century centered around events, while the 21st is defined by experiences. Global Himalayan Expedition (GHE) exemplifies this shift, using tourism to bring clean energy and livelihood opportunities to remote mountain communities. GHE goes beyond traditional tourism, transforming it into a vehicle for positive impact. Through impact expeditions, participants engage in both adventurous activities and hands-on work to address local challenges, fostering connections with indigenous populations. Each expedition revolves around a central theme, actively contributing to positive change in the region by addressing local issues. Meticulously planned, these experiences leave participants fulfilled and inspired to champion future causes.

This June, students from the International School of Zug and Luzern set out on a groundbreaking Climate Action Expedition to Ladakh. Their goal was to introduce sustainable space heating solutions to an off-grid remote village nestled at an astonishing 14,000 feet in the Himalayas, where the community relied on firewood for heating and cooking during the harsh winters. A team of 22 committed students with teachers traveled to Ladakh, where they carefully planned and implemented this space heating project for the 20 households of the village. They even went ahead to solar power an ancient monastery of the village which had no electricity. Their efforts provided the local community with an alternative to firewood, helping to preserve their heritage for future generations that might otherwise have faced the risk of fading away. This expedition not only offered sustainable technological solutions for the Himalayan community but also gave students invaluable hands-on experience in climate action and community development. The development of frontier villages and communities holds significant importance on various levels. These regions not only serve as guardians of a country's border but also have tremendous potential for sustainable livelihoods through rural tourism. Despite their significant role, these areas frequently lack fundamental infrastructure and necessary facilities. Over the years, GHE has played a crucial role in fostering the development of these communities by facilitating clean energy access, establishing sustainable infrastructure, and advancing rural tourism. The efforts have empowered local populations, preserved cultural heritage, and promoted environmental sustainability. The significance of developing frontier villages lies in cultivating thriving communities, conserving cultural heritage, and harnessing the immense potential of rural tourism for sustainable and inclusive growth. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀! In a recent initiative, GHE joined hands with the East Garo Hills District Administration to conduct a 5-day basic solar technician training program in Williamnagar, Meghalaya. Thanks to the generous support from Tata Communications and NESFAS, we were able to identify and train 30 motivated youth from the surrounding areas. Through this comprehensive training, these individuals gained invaluable theoretical and practical knowledge about both on-grid and off-grid solar systems. As the global shift towards clean energy solutions gains momentum, empowering these youth with solar skills becomes increasingly crucial. It not only enhances their employability but also plays a pivotal role in bolstering rural clean energy infrastructure. At GHE, we are deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of clean energy leaders and driving sustainable development within communities. This initiative represents a significant stride towards achieving that goal.

As we close the chapter on 2023, we are delighted to present the inaugural Tourism and Climate Change Stocktake report unveiled by the Tourism Panel on Climate Change (TPCC) at the UN COP 28 Climate Conference in December' 23. This authoritative report is a valuable resource for policymakers and the tourism industry, providing pertinent information to catalyze investment in low-carbon and climate-resilient global tourism. Featuring 24 key findings derived from insights contributed by over 60 global experts, the report assesses progress and identifies gaps in critical dimensions of tourism climate action. Additionally, the report highlights GHE's noteworthy contributions to climate action and community engagement. According to the Stocktake, “At present, no country, no destination, and no sub-sector have achieved meaningful reductions in tourism greenhouse gas emissions. The many signs of progress, good practice and innovation identified in the Stocktake need to be urgently scaled.” Explore the complete report here and anticipate that in 2024 and the years ahead, numerous impactful actions will be taken inspired by the insights presented in the report: https://lnkd.in/dYbdssVc Kudos to Susanne Daniel Geoffrey Graham Hans Hans Shannon Hannah Sebastian Tuan Gergana Hjörtur Martin Aradhana Tiffany Antonio Sandra Sarah Alison Tim Paloma Fiona
