A report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to compare leading decarbonisation roadmaps for the #aviation sector has found significant differences regarding how technologies and solutions may evolve in the transition to net zero, reports Christopher Surgenor for GreenAir News. Although all roadmaps assume sustainable aviation fuels will be responsible for the greatest amount of CO2 reductions by 2050, their role varies from 24% to 70%. This, says the report, reflects the uncertainties regarding potential supportive government action, the level of investments, cost of production and profit potential, as well as access to feedstocks. Please find attached the latest IFATCA Communication: Why are flights delayed this summer? Extract: (...) "Today, the European Air Traffic Control (ATC) System faces multiple challenges - a faster than predicted recovery of traffic post-COVID-19, high seasonal demand for holiday destinations, airspace restrictions due to security concerns, increased demand for staff availability and flexibility, an aging air traffic workforce and an ongoing training wave of the new generation of air traffic control officers (ATCOs). Traffic figures in many crucial areas in the Network exceed 2019 levels, with some regions delivering more than 25% above 2019 capacity and surpassing 2023 figures - while the European airspace availability has decreased by approximately 20% compared to 2019 due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and security-related restrictions. Combined with the limitations on overflying Russia, traffic is being rerouted through already high demand areas during the summer season. The resilience of the ATC system and its staff has been severely tested. Fatigue and system limits are being stretched after years of underinvestment. As predicted by IFATCA, the shortage of ATCOs and other staff cannot be addressed quickly enough to meet the continuous and growing demand. As a reminder, it takes an average of three years to train an ATCO, while the number of applications remain insufficient (lately). The primary objective of ATC is to operate ALL flights in a safe, orderly, and efficient manner. When factors such as weather, staffing, or technical issues prevent the system from ensuring 100% safe operations, it is the duty of ATC to reduce capacity to safeguard passengers, crews, and the interest of the public. Consequently, this may result in delays and/or cancellations, but the priority is the safe arrival of all aircraft and passengers – 24/7! (...) IFATCA reaffirms its total commitment to the women and men involved in the safe, stable, and efficient operations of the European Network. Despite the challenging conditions and well-documented staff shortages in many areas, the staff is tirelessly going the extra mile to deliver the best services possible daily. However, fatigue is becoming a serious concern. Safety and Security shall remain the absolute priorities under all circumstances.

✈ Australian Aviation Network Overview ✈ The May Australian Aviation Network Overview on trends in the Australian aviation sector is now available to view. Highlights include: ➡ In May 2024, the Australian aviation network recorded minimal growth in terms of daily average flights. Our industry continues to rebalance to a more stable seasonal trend, with softening demand following the peak Easter holiday season. ➡ Overall industry on-time performance showed a notable 15 per cent improvement over the first four months of 2024, and the cancellation rate has dropped to its long-term benchmark. This suggests that cross-industry efforts to prioritise service reliability are delivering benefits through measures such as active recruitment, streamlining procedures and strengthening responses to disruptions. ➡ We are also focused on enhancing network predictability by tightening governance around Ground Delay Programs (GDP) and refining demand/capacity balancing processes using recently deployed analytics technology. Monthly ground delays at the major airports that drive network performance have decreased by over 160 hours, or ~25 per cent, compared to the earlier months of the financial year, without adversely impacting airborne delays. Industry compliance increased by four per cent compared to the last twelve-month averages. There was no ad-hoc GDP applied at Brisbane in May. ➡ The overall air traffic management outcomes in May returned to the level seen at the beginning of 2024, largely due to unplanned staff unavailability along with high levels of air traffic control (ATC) training related to the airspace volumes around Sydney and Perth. We are actively prioritising the cross-training, recruitment and utilisation of experienced air traffic controllers, targeting locations that drive network outcomes and require higher levels of resilience. We are further refining training processes to increase speed to competency, scheduling training activities outside peak traffic demand periods and progressing endorsement reform to increase flexibility and minimise industry disruptions. Highlights include: ➡ The average number of flights grew by 2 per cent during April, driven by Easter school holiday demand. ➡ Overall air traffic management outcomes have trended favourably in recent months. ➡ In April, Airservices attributed capacity constraints affected 2.1 per cent of flights, similar to the rate observed in March. ➡ Where ground delay program (GDP) periods were implemented, 9.2 per cent of ground delay periods and 0.4 per cent of cancellations were attributable to Airservices, well below the monthly average of the past year. ➡ However short-term staff availability challenges particularly in the second half of April around Sydney and Perth demonstrate that service levels continue to be variable. ➡ We remain focused on further improving service outcomes through our training and recruitment programs, and refining enabling processes and systems. 🌟 International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for February 2024 global passenger demand with the following highlights: 📈  Total demand, measured in revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs), was up 21.5% compared to February 2023. Total capacity, measured in available seat kilometers (ASK), was up 18.7% year-on-year. 📈 International demand rose 26.3% compared to February 2023; capacity was up 25.5% year-on-year and the load factor improved to 79.3%. 📈 Domestic demand rose 15.0% compared to February 2023; capacity was up 9.4% year-on-year and the load factor was 82.6%. EU Aviation Giants Slam Proposed Non-CO2 Emissions Exclusion as “Absurd” and Potentially Illegal In a strongly-worded joint letter, leading European low-cost airlines easyJet, Ryanair, and WizzAir have voiced opposition to the proposed exclusion of extra-European Economic Area (extra-EEA) routes from the European Union’s non-CO2 Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system. The airlines argue that such an exclusion would significantly undermine the scientific value of the MRV and potentially breach EU law. The MRV system is a critical tool designed by the European Union to gather data on the non-carbon dioxide (non-CO2) effects of aviation. These effects include contrails, nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxide (SO2), water vapour, and other emissions like soot and aerosols. While the impact of CO2 emissions is well-documented, the non-CO2 effects are less understood but are believed to contribute significantly to global warming. The MRV aims to advance scientific knowledge in this area by collecting comprehensive data from the aviation sector. However, the proposed exclusion of extra-EEA routes has sparked controversy. The airlines argue that this would create a misleading impression that long-haul flights, which are suspected to generate the most significant non-CO2 effects, have no impact. Leading airlines like United, American, and Delta saw strong year-over-year increases, while Miami, JFK, and DFW airports experienced significant traffic expansions. Denver and Las Vegas had more moderate growth rates. Notably, Hawaiian Airlines and JetBlue recorded slight declines during this period.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for May 2024 global passenger demand, revealing a 10.7% increase in total demand, measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs), compared to May 2023. Meanwhile, total capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASK), was up 8.5% year-on-year. The May load factor was 83.4% (+1.7 percentage point compared to May 2023), a record high for May. The collective aspirational global goal agreed by governments six months ago to reduce CO2 emissions in international aviation by 2030 through the use of sustainable aviation fuels and lower carbon fuels is impossible to achieve or at best highly ambitious, said Willie Walsh, Director General of International Air Transport Association (IATA) at the association’s AGM in #Dubai, hosted by Emirates, reports Christopher Surgenor for GreenAir News. He also rejected a claim by a UAE government representative that IATA, along with other industry stakeholders, had pushed for the target at ICAO’s third Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) held last November, also in Dubai. Achieving the target required governments to deliver concrete measures to facilitate the exponential ramp-up of SAF they were calling for, said Walsh. He said that in the past, the industry had been rightly criticised for setting environmental targets that it could not and did not achieve.
