    We investigated the chemical composition of sediments from eight reservoirs located in the semi-arid drylands of Brazil, which is one of the driest regions in the world. We conclude that high phosphorus load present in their sediments can be released and contribute to the maintenance of eutrophication (internal loading mechanism) of these water bodies.

    Eutrophication is one of the main causes of freshwater pollution. This problem causes a great social and economic impact in the region, because the water stored in these reservoirs is used for human supply, agriculture, fishing and livestock.

    Our results suggest that future quality management strategies in these environments involve internal load control. We suggest that measures such as removal of the nutrient-rich surface layer of sediment, P inactivation through the application of natural agents and removal of benthivorous fish can reduce the effects of internal P load and improve the water quality of these water bodies.
