We have finally found three words that define our process.

The only way is forward. We’re going through a rebranding process with the infinitely talented Matthew Ray Scott and Amanda Cardwell Carones MPH and can’t wait to share their concept for the Wellington Eye Clinic. Everyone in our team grasped and loved it immediately. New photos always help and we were spotted from a distance going through the process. Stay tuned for a reveal in the coming days.

How do you which IOLs are the best for your needs when you are having lens replacement surgery, whether for cataracts or for refractive purposes?

Thank you Rod Solar! I hope that this article resonates with colleagues performing lens replacement surgery, both for cataract and refractive purposes. The playbook that Rod created is simple to follow and hopefully you find it useful.

Blended vision: One eye (normally the sensory dominant eye) is corrected for distance while the fellow eye is corrected for near. This approach can achieve freedom from glasses for the vast majority of tasks and is achievable using either laser vision correction (LASIK or PRK) or lens replacement surgery. All patients who are presbyopic or nearing the age of presbyopia development who attend the Wellington Eye Clinic are assessed to see if they are good blended vision candidates. This approach does not work for everyone and it is important to properly screen candidates. Fortunately if you aren’t a good candidate for blended vision we have other options to achieve increased independence from glasses for distance and near vision! Thanks Lulu Xiao and our littlest lady for the modeling! 🥰

We all have to get our house in order regarding sustainability in medicine, healthcare, and ophthalmology. The Irish College of Ophthalmologists's recent conference in Westport had a session dedicated to this with excellent speakers. I tackled a different issue: the sustainability of ophthalmology with the growing demand thanks to the ageing population and decreasing workforce (ophthalmologists). More ophthalmologists are retiring than trainees entering the field. With improved system design, AI use, and enhanced collaboration with optometry, we can address this ever-increasing demand-supply mismatch.

The Irish College of Ophthalmologists annual conference 2024 is being held in beautiful Westport in the west of Ireland. Mr Brendan Cummings gave an excellent 60 minute overview of topography and tomography in clinical practice and TCD medical student Rachel Madden shared our results with CAIRS with KeraNatural and various surgical approaches to improve the quality of vision in keratoconus. Mr Cummings represented the WEC very well indeed.

After 30 years doing LASIK and phakic IOLs, I still learn something from attending meetings. The AIER 4th International Refractive Surgery Symposium in Changsha, China, did not disappoint. In fact, it did the exact opposite. We’ve seen the future! As a newly elected member of the AIER Global Refractive Surgery Advisory Council, I could not be more optimistic about the future of vision correction. Xie Xie to the AIER leadership for this kind invitation and significant honour. #AierChangsha

It is with profound gratitude and a sense of humility that I find myself included on this prestigious list. May we continue to learn, grow, and uplift one another, for greatness lies not only in accolades but in our shared journey of discovery. May we keep our duty and responsibility to our patients our top priority. Thank you The Ophthalmologist !

It was a privilege for three of our Wellington Eye Clinic team to contribute to the annual Ocular Surface Insight (OSI) conference and Dry Eye Masterclass being held in London. Mr Brendan Cummings spoke about ICL surgery for patients with dry eye and Mr Cian Gildea, FAOI, FIACLE, FBCLA about the role of contact lenses in dry eye. Mr Arthur Cummings moderated the session with excellent contributions from Dr Suphi Taneri, Dr Aylin Kılıç and Professor Michael Mrochen.

Each year Doctors’ Day is marked on the 30th March and we celebrate our doctors around the world. 💙 In Ireland today, over 300,000 people are employed in healthcare. Over 20,000 of these are medical doctors. Doctors in Ireland can be General Practitioners (GPs) or be specialised in any one of many healthcare disciplines, working in a variety of settings, including hospitals. Today we take this opportunity to express our appreciation to our doctors for their dedication, compassion and commitment to healthcare. Most especially our doctors, consultants, surgeons and physicians here in Beacon Hospital and the incredible GPs in our community! 💕 We are so lucky to have so many hard-working, dedicated, wonderful doctors as part of our team providing an excellent standard of care to all our patients. To all doctors, thank you for all that you do, today and every day. Happy Doctors’ Day! 💙
