The final category in the #RIAIAwards we are covering today is Research. This award recognises excellence in architectural research, which is integral to the practice of architecture and contributes to the development of knowledge, which can have far reaching positive social, cultural and environmental impacts. The Jury presented a Research Award to Donaghy + Dimond Architects for their housing and urban design research, ‘Model Housing and Urban Horticulture’, for the #HousingUnlocked exhibition by the Irish Architecture Foundation and The Housing Agency Ireland. The jury said: “This pioneering research, focused on a historic area of Dublin, provides an exemplar of urban surgery or ‘horticulture’. The project demonstrates how new urban dwellings can reference and complement the surviving historic fabric, whilst providing contemporary new homes and green spaces for city living.” A second Award was given to the Office of Public Works and Shaffrey Architects for their work into ‘Improving the energy efficiency of heritage properties in State care’. The Jury noted that this research “establishes guidance for upgrading the energy performance of the public estate, whilst also preserving the material value of its historic building fabric. This research meets a demand for the state sector to take a lead in developing models that will have application at every level of the industry and is thus both timely, and exemplary.” The Jury also made a Special Award in this category to O'Donnell + Tuomey for a unique ‘Collaboration between designers and craftspersons’ for Stone Vessel. Built hand-by-hand, stone-by-stone by stone masons from Ireland and Japan in collaboration with Joseph Walsh Studio, the vessel is of an extraordinary quality. The jury described the project as “delightful, in all meanings of the word. It is a testament to ‘making’ and a reminder of the origins of Architecture where Architect and craftspeople worked hand in hand to make buildings.” The RIAI Awards 2024 are proudly supported by Sika Ireland. Today we are featuring the #RIAIAwards Winners for Housing Developments. The jury awarded an exemplar of Low-Rise Medium-Density Housing by DTA Architects, Infill Housing & Rectory at Purser Gardens, Rathmines. The RIAI has been advocating for this new housing typology to create sustainable communities in our cities and towns. The jury described the project as: “generous and deceptively simple; an exemplar for urban housing elsewhere.” The second Winner for Low-Rise Medium-Density Housing is Wilkinsons Brook by Proctor & Matthews Architects Architects, de Blacam and Meagher Architects and Doran Cray Eamonn Doran MRIAI. The jury said: “If the measure of success of a housing scheme is its ability to enhance the living experience of its residents, then Wilkinsons Brook is likely to lead the way. This is an outstanding piece of Architecture and Urban Design.” One Lime Street by Henry J Lyons Architects was selected by the jury as the Winner for High-Density Housing as a project that “delivers a dense and high-quality residential scheme on a difficult urban site with an apparent effortless ease.” The Winner for Public Housing is Cornamona Court by Paul Keogh Architects. The jury said: “Cornamona possesses a robust quality that typically characterises public housing, but also demonstrates how some carefully considered decisions can elevate a scheme beyond its own constraints. This housing project answers the needs of its community while making a sophisticated contribution to the city.” The RIAI Awards 2024 are proudly supported by Sika Ireland. We are continuing our coverage of the #RIAIAwards Winners this week with the largest category, Living, starting with houses. The first Winner in the Adaptation category is Apple Tree Terrace by Scullion Architects. The jury said: “The house is generously illuminated with roof lights, large windows and a central lightwell, which effectively draws light and landscaping into the depth of the plan. When the glazed doors of this space are all open, the external air and ambience permeates the interior, creating a very special place.” The second Winner for House Adaptation is Barney's Ruins by Patrick Bradley Architect. The Jury described it as: “a manifesto encouraging sustainable-thinking and working with the landscape. The tiny guest room is an exemplar of contemporary vernacular construction. Simple, coherent and fun.” The third Winner for House Adaptation is a all-timber micro extension by Robert Bourke Architects, High Street Balbriggan. The Jury described the project as: “the confluence of a good Architect and a good client working seamlessly together to create a modest but beautiful home. The project, through the making of a carefully judged addition of a mere 3 square metres to the rear, and some minor internal alterations, transforms the house entirely.” Living in a Landscape by Arigho Larmour Wheeler Architects | Dublin & Belfast was selected by the jury as the Winner in the New House category. The jury praised the design approach as: “an exemplar in providing a beautiful home while improving the public realm. There is a simplicity of materials throughout, with rigour of detailing that remains restrained but not austere. A timeless piece sitting beautifully in its landscape.” The RIAI Awards 2024 are proudly supported by Sika Ireland.
