On June 1st, the Unified Patent Court (UPC) marked its first anniversary. Since the start of the year, nearly one in four European patents granted has been converted into a Unitary Patent. Romania is set to join the list of participating countries on September 1st, 2024. From this date forward, all Unitary Patents will include protection in Romania. This development will bolster the UPC and may inspire other countries who have not yet completed ratification to follow suit. The European Patent Office (EPO) will now accept requests to delay the registration of unitary effect, allowing users to benefit from this update. The delay must be explicitly requested when filing for unitary effect. If all registration requirements are fulfilled, the EPO will postpone the registration until Romania's ratification takes effect or shortly thereafter. #PatentLaw #PatentAttorney #UPC #UnitaryPatents
