(AL) Bats can sometimes get a bad rap but in this episode of the In Your Nature podcast, we hope to dispel some myths and shine a light on these truly remarkable creatures. For this conversation, we are joined by Bat Ecologist and Senior Projects Manager with Bat Conservation Ireland Niamh Roche, who gives us an insight into the lives of Ireland's nine species of bat. On listening to this episode, you'll quickly that bats are not to be feared, but to be celebrated. Not only are they fascinating in their own right, bats also provide a number of ecosystem services, including insect control and pollination. Tune in to the latest episode here: https://lnkd.in/ec9QMxaf In Your Nature features Ricky Whelan, Biodiversity Officer with Offaly County Council and Niall Hatch of BirdWatch Ireland and is edited by Ann-Marie Kelly. (AL) Next week's episode of In Your Nature is another collaboration with Collie Ennis of The Critter Shed and this time, we're talking all about the Grey Heron! Although amphibian expert Collie has an understandably complex relationship with the Heron, this episode has given him a newfound respect for the species! While they're known as skilled fishers, did you know that Herons have adapted to consume a wide range of prey including small mammals, insects and reptiles? Or that they have small combs on the underside of each foot to help them to keep their feathers in tip-top condition? Learn about this and more by tuning in to the next episode. The episode goes live early on Monday and you will find it wherever you get your podcasts or at the following link: https://lnkd.in/ewD-XSwZ. (AL) We recently paid a visit to Dublin Port to ring some Common Tern chicks. Some facts about this incredible species: Common Terns breed in Ireland (and other parts of northern Europe) in the summer months before returning to Africa for the winter. Terns earned themselves the nickname “sea swallow” due to their forked tails and pointed wings. Common Terns usually nest in dense colonies, often alongside other species such as Arctic and Roseate Terns, and Black-headed Gulls. Common Terns are a ground-nesting species. They lay their eggs in shallow depressions in the ground called scrapes, which they later tidy up by throwing shells, bone fragments and vegetation over their shoulders. Check out this beautiful nest we found at Dublin Port! By metal and colour-ringing birds, we can learn a lot about birds and the journeys that they take. Because of this work, we know that we've had birds from Rockabill, Dalkey, Northern Ireland, Cork Harbour and Merseyside in Liverpool, all nesting in the Port. Dublin Port Company
