In South Sudan, nearly 50% of the population is chronically undernourished. Only 4% of children receive enough food or nutrients to meet their basic dietary requirements. To combat child malnutrition, GOAL supports mother-to-mother feeding groups in six health facilities in Kajo-Keji County, with generous funding from European Commission - ECHO and Irish Aid ➡️ https://hubs.la/Q02HNvrg0 Mother-to-mother feeding groups improve community participation in child nutrition best practices through educational and awareness-raising activities. Kiden is a 27-year-old mother who learned how to grow her own food and prepare nutritious meals for her two children after joining her local mother-to-mother feeding group. “The kitchen garden initiative has empowered mothers to prepare nutritious local recipes from assorted vegetables,” Kiden said, smiling. “We are so happy about all these new diets. They greatly help our children to grow healthy.”

🌍 Did you know over 3.6 billion people live in areas highly susceptible to climate change? Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths per year from undernutrition, malaria, diarrhoea, and heat stress alone. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and shifting rainfall patterns are just a few challenges we face. 🌡️💧 Like many Mediterranean countries, Türkiye is particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. In recent decades, the country has experienced increasingly frequent and intense floods, heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, landslides, and extreme windstorms. Environmental issues hit seasonal agricultural workers and nomadic communities hardest. These groups often face significant hardships due to changing climate conditions, affecting their livelihoods and living conditions. Extreme weather events destroy crops, contributing to food insecurity and economic instability. For many, this is compounded by the existing challenges of displacement. In response, GOAL Türkiye takes proactive steps to address these challenges - facilitating activities for children, youth, and adults to emphasise climate change impacts and explore mitigation strategies. 🌱 Thanks to the generous funding of the European Commission - ECHO as part of the LINK project, GOAL can continue to facilitate workshops and interactive sessions with vulnerable groups to educate them on environmental stewardship and practical steps to protect our planet. By employing a participatory approach, we empower displaced and vulnerable communities in Türkiye with climate mitigation strategies, helping them safeguard their livelihoods and overall wellbeing. 🌳♻️ #ClimateChange #EnvironmentalStewardship #ClimateAction #GOALTürkiye #SustainableFuture #CommunityEmpowerment #ClimateMitigation

In South Sudan, a combination of conflict, extreme poverty, climate change, and displacement has culminated in a dire hunger crisis. 57% of the country's population is likely to experience food insecurity during this year's lean season. GOAL is supporting the use of kitchen gardens in vulnerable communities to help households survive the period between harvests, with funding from European Commission - ECHO ➡️ https://hubs.la/Q02Hp4HX0 Paulino, a 45-year-old father of five, learned how to cultivate his own kitchen garden with support from GOAL. Now, he has an abundance of fresh food for personal consumption all throughout the year.

The United Nations has described war ravaged #Sudan where civilian suffering is extreme, as a ‘humanitarian nightmare’ and the war shows no sign of coming to an end. But our 150+ strong team in Sudan remains loyal to and resilient in the communities, they live among and serve, both in North Darfur and South Kordofan. These images taken over the past week show seed fairs and tool distribution by GOAL team members to 1,600 farmers so they can sow crops and feed their families, in Tortange Rashad Locality, South Kordofan. This humanitarian aid is generously funded by the Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SHF), a multi-donor country-based pooled fund managed by United Nations OCHA Sudan.

“Last winter, GOAL took a burden off our backs when they distributed winterisation assistance.” - Suleiman, 68, displaced teacher from Aleppo. Forced from their home in 2016, Suleiman's family has faced unimaginable hardships, only to be exacerbated during the brutal Syrian winters. In response to this dire need, GOALs winterisation programmes provide critical cash assistance to displaced families, like Suleiman's. Last winter, over 14,350 families in North Aleppo received support to purchase essential winter supplies. "My wife and I both suffer from various diseases, aching in all parts of our bodies. At our age, the human body cannot withstand the cold anymore," says Suleiman. "With the cash they gave us, I managed to buy heating materials and save a little money for food and medicine." With another winter just around the corner, GOAL teams are already preparing for the challenges ahead. Read Suleiman's full story to understand the importance of timely support for families facing winter in displacement ⏬⏬ https://hubs.la/Q02HctMW0 #GOAL #GOALSyria #FromCrisesToResilience #HumanitarianAid #WinterRelief #Syria #CashAssistance

While visiting Kenya and #Ethiopia this week, our Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, has been meeting with political leaders to discuss Ireland's continued support to development and future peace and stability. The Tánaiste has also been meeting with reps from INGO's that are working in Ethiopia and supported by Irish Aid and Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland In Aiddis Ababa this eve, our Regional Director for Africa, John Rynne and our Acting CD for GOAL Ethiopia, Richard Ukuni, were honored to meet with the Tánaiste, who has always been a loyal advocate for the humanitarian aid sector and have the opportunity to brief the Minister on GOAL’s work in Ethiopia since the 1980’s. Today GOAL Ethiopia with a staff of 780+ targets the most vulnerable of communities with specialised programming in health, nutrition, food security, WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene), livelihoods and protection and we work across 60 districts in eight regional states: Afar, Amhara, Gambella, Oromiya, Benshangul, SNNP, Tigray and Somali. In 2023, we reached 3.6M people with our programes across these 60 districts in Ethiopia.

This week, Mary Van Lieshout, our Deputy CEO and Alf Martyn, our Director of Investigations, delivered in-person Risk Management training to our South Sudan team in Juba. GOAL’s humanitarian aid and development work is delivered in extremely hard-to-reach contexts experiencing protracted conflict, fragility, and insecurity. While GOAL cannot operate without taking risks, the safety and well-being of our staff and the communities that we work with are of the highest importance to us. Risk Management is therefore a critical element of our everyday operations and the business of every staff member. To this end, we strive to implement a 'whole-of-organisational' risk management approach. Some risks and opportunities, including innovating for efficiency, must be embraced, while others must be minimised. GOAL's Risk Appetite approach enables us to make informed decisions that promote strong organisational governance and effectively manage risks and uncertainties, while still aligning with our Strategy 2025 to help communities move from #CrisisToResilience.

After 15 months of civil war, the situation inside #Sudan is desperate. More than eight million people, half of whom are children, are currently displaced across the country and the wider region and half the population (25 million people) is experiencing food insecurity. The productive capacity of the country, from farms to factories, has been severely damaged, leaving the economy in a state of collapse. According to United Nations assessment, Sudan is both the largest displacement crisis and biggest food crisis in the world today. But GOAL’s 150+ strong Sudan Team drives on and these pictures show seed and tool distribution by our team to 1,000 farmers in Rashad Locality, South Kordofan last week, kindly supported by USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance.
