PROVIDING HEALTHY & AFFORDABLE “KAMPUNG DERET” FOR RESIDENTS Residents of densely populated Kampungs often face challenges related to the unhealthy living conditions of their dwellings and the legal aspects of land ownership. In some areas, the land is illegal and not meant for residential construction, leading to uncertainty for the inhabitants. Finding alternative housing that is both healthy and legal is difficult due to the high costs, which are unaffordable for those with average or below-average incomes. Government support in providing legal housing with healthy living conditions at affordable prices for the middle and lower-income groups is essential. One solution is the construction of "kampung deret," which are low-rise vertical residences with two floors featuring a multi-family, co-housing, shared spaces system. These residences also include public facilities like pocket parks for gatherings and play. This type of housing is suitable in areas with limited land. It is also more culture-friendly, especially for communities accustomed to living in landed houses rather than apartment buildings, resulting in less resistance. #urbanplanning #urbandesign #affordablehousing #kampung

IMPROVING ACCESS TO PUBLIC OPEN SPACE IN FLOOD-PRONE KAMPUNG For a densely populated Kampung, residents' access to public open spaces requires attention. The existence of open spaces for gatherings, children's play areas, and community events is crucial. These spaces serve as a respite and a natural existence amid the densely built environment, offering opportunities for social interaction, exercise, and leisure activities. They can also host local celebrations such as weddings, music events, bazaars, and other public gatherings. These spaces can foster local economic growth by providing a venue for residents to sell goods and nurture entrepreneurial spirit. The vibrant community life in these Kampungs, often characterised by a strong sense of mutual support (gotong royong), can be further enhanced by such communal areas. Additionally, these public spaces need to be flood-resistant. Elevated decks and water-resistant materials can ensure the areas remain usable and durable during high tides. #urbanplanning #urbandesign #architecture #landscapearchitecture #placemaking #coastalcommunities #climatechange #naturebasedsolutions

REJUVENATING COASTAL KAMPUNG Coastal kampung(s) consistently face various challenges, including flooding, tidal inundation, accumulation of waste at river mouths, and poor infrastructure quality, which lead to environmental degradation and a low standard of living. In addition to improve the quality of sanitation and water supply, improving the quality of life for city dwellers residing in these coastal communities can be achieved by mitigating their flood risk by constructing nature-based flood control infrastructure, such as levees, and by building stilt houses to adapt to flood conditions. Additionally, enhancing community well-being and elevating the standard of living can be achieved by improving access to open spaces and nature for all residents, including children, women, the elderly, and people with disability. The presence of water features can add significant value to public open spaces, transforming them into attractive recreational areas for the community. Coastal kampung residents deserve a quality of life on par with other city dwellers, as cities are built for everyone, not just a select few. #urbanplanning #urbandesign #coastalcommunities #naturebasedsolutions #placemaking
