Addressing serious gaps in the existing international legal framework for combatting wildlife crime #endwildlifecrime
About us
The Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime (EWC) is a broad alliance of environmental, policy, legal, business and public health experts; created to address serious gaps in the existing international legal framework for combating wildlife crime and regulating wildlife trade. EWC advocates for, and offers technical support towards, (1) the creation of a new global agreement on wildlife crime and (2) the amendment of existing international wildlife trade laws to include public and animal health in decision making. EWC is hosted by ADM Capital Foundation and chaired by John Scanlon AO (the former Secretary General of CITES), with a steering group comprising the Born Free Foundation, The Food and Land Use Coalition, the Global Environmental Institute and The ICCF Group.

The Metropolitan Police Service, London is dismantling its Met Wildlife Crime Unit, which has been in existence for 20 years. The Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime has written an open letter to Sir Mark Rowly QPM, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service, requesting the Met to reconsider this decision and the reasons why it should do so. Feel free to share this open letter widely and to lend your support to ensuring the Met retains a fully operational Wildlife Crime Unit. For some context. The website for the Metropolitan Police Service says that it has over 34,200 police officers as well as 10,500 police staff, 1,280 police community support officers, and 1,300 Metropolitan special constables, making it the United Kingdom’s largest police force. It does not seem too much to ask for the Met to maintain its Wildlife Crime Unit, with just two dedicated police officers, as well as two police staff, to support a global and national effort to prevent and combat these serious and highly destructive crimes. On 4-7 June 2024, the Council of Europe Committee of Experts on the Protection of the Environment through Criminal Law (PC-ENV) held its final round of negotiations for a new environmental crime Convention. The Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime participated in the proceedings as an observer. The Initiative congratulates the negotiating States on successfully concluding the text of the Convention, which will eventually be open for signature by both member and non-member States of the Council of Europe. The Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime has taken part in every meeting of the PC-ENV since April 2023, offering technical inputs as an observer and urging States to adopt an ambitious text to prevent and combat wildlife crimes (Art. 24 and 24 bis) - alongside Born Free Foundation and the Wildlife Justice Commission. The final meeting of the PC-ENV will be held on 7-9 October 2024 at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and will be dedicated to discuss and agree on the Explanatory Memorandum. 📌 For more information on the PC-ENV, visit: https://lnkd.in/d7b_RmFv #EndWildlifeCrime #CouncilofEurope ADM Capital Foundation John Scanlon AO Alice Pasqualato Elodie Cantaloube Olivia Swaak-Goldman

🐘 🌍 Celebrating the 4th Anniversary of the Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime on UN World Environment Day 2024! 🌍🐘 We are excited to introduce the launch of our 'Impact Technology Champions,' a pioneering network of technologists, independent software vendors (ISVs), independent hardware vendors (IHVs), and system integrators (SIs) who are integrating and scaling solutions to harness technology to fight wildlife crime and safeguard our planet. Co-chaired by Sarah M. W. Maston, EWC Special Adviser on Technology and Founder of Project 15 from Microsoft, and John Scanlon AO, this new network will bring together a diverse array of partners committed to making a difference. “We are running out of time. There will be no ‘killer app’ for conservation. What we need is a ‘killer partner ecosystem’”, said Sarah Maston. Stay tuned for the announcement of the founding Impact Technology Champions in the coming weeks.
