Ambient Pop combines Pop songwriting with Ambient sound design and aesthetics. It is characterized by the use of Electronic instruments (particularly layered pads, synthesizers, etc.) to create the ambient atmosphere, along with delicate and airy vocals. Acoustic instruments are also sometimes used as accompaniment, particularly pianos, keyboards, strings, light drums and guitars.

While often confused with Dream Pop, Ambient Pop relies much more heavily on influences from genres such as Downtempo, Jazz Pop, and Drone, as opposed to Alternative Rock. The genre does, however, often overlap with Art Pop.
