About Alternative Rap

Alternative hip-hop, also known as alternative rap, is a phrase used to describe rap that doesn’t fit the genre’s sonic or lyrical conventions. It isn’t a specific subgenre per se, but rather an umbrella term to distinguish artists who divert from the mainstream status quo.

Rap such as Hardcore Hip-Hop, Gangsta Rap, Pop/Party Rap, and Boom Bap more often than not remain true to hip-hop’s traditional roots. Alternative hip-hop, however, experiments by expanding upon typical elements of rap: fusions of jazz and funk music, more introspective lyricism and concepts, stream of consciousness flows, etc.
