Secret Life Lyrics

[Intro: Jack Antonoff]
One, two, three, four

[Verse 1: Jack Antonoff]
Out of my head, I'm beggin' for skin-to-skin
You don't say much 'cause you've been cheated before me
I know you think I think I'm better than I am
But I'm not tryin' to wake up in some promise land

[Chorus: Jack Antonoff]
I just want a secret life
Where you and I can get bored out of our minds
I just wanna have you in a secret life
'Cause I'm sick of chasing after holy ghosts
Been tryin' to tell you I want you the most

[Verse 2: Jack Antonoff, Jack Antonoff & Lana Del Rey]
You're always looking like a photograph just took
Acting high life, reading your old Russian books
Don't I know that you think I think I'm better than I am
Oh, honey, I'm not tryin' to wake up in some promise land

[Chorus: Jack Antonoff, Jack Antonoff & Lana Del Rey]
I just want a secret life
Where you and I can get bored out of our minds
I just wanna have you in a secret life
'Cause I'm sick of chasing all these holy ghosts
I been tryin' to tell you I want you the most
[Bridge: Jack Antonoff]
And I talk so much
But I talk so much, it's nice
I talk so much because I'm scared to begin

[Chorus: Jack Antonoff, Jack Antonoff & Lana Del Rey]
God, I want a secret life
Where you and I can get bored out of our minds
I just want to have you in a secret life

'Cause I'm sick of looking after all my ghosts
Been tryin' to tell you I love you the most

Genius Annotation

In an interview with Coup De Main, Antonoff described the process behind the song:

I just sat down and wrote it, and I don’t know where the fuck it came from. I love that song. It’s all about wanting to build a life that’s no one else’s, with someone you love"

What did Bleachers say about "Secret Life"?
Genius Answer

Jack Antonoff:

I do this thing a few times in the album where you have a feeling and you look at it from two polar-opposite positions. “Big Life” is this ‘let me go out there, let me get burned and let the world knock me over because I’m trying to find love’, right? I want a secret life where you and I can get bored out of our minds. It’s not a chase. It’s not running out there to prove something. It’s a very optimistic song, which is basically when the chemicals wear off and you’re really in it with someone. At first, maybe I thought it would be a duet with Lana where it could be conversational, but then I realised that if I just put some reverb on her voice and have her kind of crest over the second verse and the chorus, she’s more like a dream of this person I’m talking to.

Genius Answer

While Lana was never credited on a Bleachers song before, she has worked extensively with Jack Antonoff, Bleachers' frontman. Jack produced most of her sixth studio album Norman Fucking Rockwell! as well as most of her seventh album Chemtrails Over The Country Club

Lana is also a credited writer and background vocalist on “Don’t Go Dark,” another song from this album.
