THE GREATEST Lyrics
I'm trying my best
To keep you satisfied
Let you get your rest
While I stayed up all night
[Pre-Chorus]
And you don't wanna know
How alone I've been
Let you come and go
Whatever state I'm in, ah
[Chorus]
Man, am I the greatest?
My congratulations
All my love and patience
All my admiration
All the times I waited
For you to want me naked
Made it all look painless
Man, am I the greatest?
[Post-Chorus]
Hm
Oh-oh, hm
Doing what's right
Without a reward
And we don't have to fight
When it's not worth fighting for (Fighting for), mm
[Pre-Chorus]
And you don't wanna know (Know)
What I would've done (Done), hm
Anything at all
Worse than anyone
Mm, ooh
[Chorus]
Man, am I the greatest? (Greatest)
My congratulations (Congratulations)
All my love and patience
All my admiration (Admiration)
All the times I waited (Waited)
For you to want me naked (Naked)
I made it all look painless
Man, am I the greatest?
[Bridge]
The greatest
The greatest, ah-oh
I, I
I loved you
And I still do
Just wanted passion from you
Just wanted what I gave you
I waited
And waited (Oh)
About
This track explores themes of love and anger.
This song was released on the 17th of May 2024, with the help of composer FINNEAS O'CONNELL. ‘FINNEAS O'CONNEL’ is an American musician and actor, also being Billie’s older (by four years) brother. As mentioned in some interviews with Billie, she brought up that her brother helped her with some of the songs and lyrics. An example is in ‘idontwannabeyouanymore’, one of Billie’s earlier releases, the bar (and song title) ‘I don’t wanna be you, Anymore’ was brought to life by her brother thinking it up.
‘THE GREATEST’ is presumed to be a ‘story’ about love/sex and anger/sadness, more specifically Billie working hard for someone/doing something for someone and not even appreciating her affection.
The lines about ‘Man, am I the greatest?’ could be assumed to possibly be a statement the lover she is giving protection and affection to saying that she [Billie] is ‘the greatest’ as a compliment. But after the fight/whatever happened in this song Billie starts to doubt and finds herself questioning her ‘greatness’. Its just a guess though, there’s no concrete evidence or anything that I have found.

That’s one of my favourite songs on the album. Also, making that song really opened a door to being honest, that I hadn’t really been letting happen. We finished the album after that… it just started flowing out of us super naturally.
