🌟 OUT NOW! ⚡ Renewable power has seen record growth in 2023 despite massive fossil fuel subsidies, but heat and fuels lag behind. That’s according to the new Renewables in Energy Supply Module of #GSR2024. 💡 Renewables now make up a record 30.3% of global electricity, owing to long-term policy attention that helped drive down costs. 🔌 In 2023, 86% of new power capacity came from renewables, with global additions up 54%, reaching 536 GW. Solar PV (407 GW) and wind (117 GW) dominate, making up 98% of these additions. 🚨 However, we’re far from reaching the COP28 renewable energy target which would require, global capacity additions need to reach almost 1 TW per year. ⌛ At the same time, fossil fuels continue to dominate global energy supply with a 79% share. And governments are neglecting heat and fuels, the energy carriers that supply about 78% of the world’s energy. 💥 This is holding back the energy transition. 🌿 Without structural transformations and reforms of the fossil-fuelled energy system, we will not be able to build renewables-based resilient economies free from coal, oil and gas. To enable the energy transition, we need to make sustainable transport the norm. But how do we get there? What is the right fuel mix? Who drives the transition? Who funds the transition? This dialogue brings together a stellar panel of stakeholders from government, NGOs, academia and industry to delve into these and other critical questions and tension points surrounding the role of renewables in transport, as explored in the Global Futures Report: Renewables for Sustainable Transport. Register for the event here: https://lnkd.in/ec--PHEd #RenewablesNow #REbootTheWorld #ChooseRenewables #GlobalFutures #SustainableTransport

⚡We just concluded the fifth and final workshop in our PAC series -Stakeholder Engagement in Energy Planning: Across All Voltage Levels! Here are some insights from the workshop – ⭕ Long-term energy planning must be the standard. It can create consensus and conversations among different stakeholders, with countries benefitting from collaborative planning mechanisms.  ⭕ We must champion the multi-stakeholder approach: including provinces, trade associations, NGOs, national government -- everyone! ⭕ Local realities must be taken into account while deploying renewables. ⭕ Communication is key. We need to create spaces to share information among DSOs/TSOs and other stakeholders, when it comes to energy planning. Finally, we leave you with this video snippet from the workshop, with Juan Jose Garcia reiterating the importance of political engagement from the very beginning. We’re grateful to our panellists for leading the conversation - John Alexander Cardozo DuarteXM SA ESP | Andrzej Ceglarz, PhDRenewables Grid Initiative | Juan Jose GarciaInternational Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) | Adrian HielEnergy Cities | Elijah Sichone, Regional Energy Regulators Association of Southern Africa And a big thank you to Renewables Grid Initiative and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) for co-organising this workshop. #RenewablesNow #PowerToChange #ChooseRenewables #REbootTheWorld

Join us for our online dialogue bringing together a stellar panel to delve into the critical questions and tension points about the role of renewables in transport. The Future of Sustainable Transport: Renewables Bridging Perspectives 31 July 10:00 - 11:00 CET, 8:00 - 9:00 UTC Registration Link: https://lnkd.in/gqf7bpg5 ⚡ Transport is the fastest-growing energy-consuming sector, increasing at an average rate of 2% per year and accounting for 30% of the total final energy consumption. As the sector relies almost exclusively on fossil fuels, it is responsible for 20% of global CO2 emissions.   🌐 Demand for transport is projected to nearly double by 2050, but the sector’s share of renewable energy is small — only 4% — and not expanding at the necessary pace. Building on REN21's Global Futures Report: Renewables in Transport, the session aims to foster dialogue on the multifaceted challenges and opportunities in integrating renewable energy into the transport sector. The conversation will emphasise the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration in overcoming barriers and accelerating the transition to sustainable transport systems #GlobalFutures #RenewablesNow #SustainableTransport #FossilFreeTransport

REN21's Rana Adib and Janne Luise Piper recently attended the regional NDC TIA conference in Bangkok, connecting with many pioneers of sustainable transport and sharing the renewable energy perspective. ✨ In collaboration with SLOCAT Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport, we held a side event on Accelerating the Transition Towards Fossil-Free Transport that brought together transport, energy and other stakeholders from Asia and beyond to discuss best practices and approaches to decarbonising both sectors. 📣 We also launched our latest Global Futures Report on Sustainable Transport. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/dPY-pVCS "What a great moment this was to learn about the inspiring developments in sustainable transport in Thailand, India, China and the Philippines. When you look back to where we stood just a few years ago, it is very exciting to now be discussing the link between the transport and energy transitions and the opportunities to build renewables into sustainable transport commitments." - Rana Adib, REN21 Executive Director "This was an amazing opportunity to connect with pioneers of sustainable transport, discuss the realities of regional and local transport in Asia, and emphasise the need of justice and equity being at the heart of both the transport and energy transitions." - Janne Piper, Research & Project Management Thank you to NDC TIA for creating the space for open dialogue and learning to accelerate the transition to a sustainable future together, now! #RenewablesInTransport #RenewablesNow #REbootTheWorld

⚠️A strong reality check of the #energytransition - our energy demand is increasing and much of that increase is met by #fossilfuels Between 2011 and 2021, total energy demand increased by 39 EJ: ❌fossil fuels and traditional biomass covered 53% of this increase ✅vs modern renewables - covering only 45% So yes, we have record growth in renewable power capacity, record investments and many countries are passing new targets. But we need to check if the new installed capacity is just covering an increase in energy demand or if it's actually replacing and pushing out fossil fuels. That's why #energyefficiency and #renewables need to go hand in hand for a real system-wide energy transformation! This is me continuing my REN21 #20for20 series (it's been a while!) - with figure 5. I'll try to make sure that figure 6 is coming soon. Link to full REN21 report in comments 👇

REN21 calls for shift to renewables to decarbonise transport https://lnkd.in/ehhf3gNP Transport’s dependence on fossil fuels is holding back energy transition and worsening climate change As one of the most energy intensive sectors, transport is still heavily dependent on fossil fuels, holding back the energy transition while exacerbating climate change and slowing the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Transport consumes 30% of the world’s total final energy. Most of this (96%) comes from fossil fuels to a large extent oil, and is responsible for 20% of global emissions, according to REN21’s Renewables in Demand Module of the 2024 Global Status Report (GSR) Collection.
