Advanced thinking on nuclear energy

À propos

NEA membership consists of 34 countries representing 82% of the world's installed nuclear electricity generating capacity. The mission of the NEA is to assist its member countries in maintaining and further developing, through international co-operation, the scientific, technological and legal bases required for a safe, environmentally sound and economical use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. It strives to provide authoritative assessments and to forge common understandings on key issues as input to government decisions on nuclear energy policy and to broader OECD analyses in areas such as energy and the sustainable development of low-carbon economies. The information, data and analyses it provides draw on one of the best international networks of technical experts.

👩💼 9 mentors 🎒 43 secondary school students from Japan 👩🎓 4 high school students from Illinois – all female - took part in the NEA International Mentoring Workshop in Futaba, Fukushima Prefecture in Japan, held on 27-29 July 2024. Embracing 𝑱𝒐𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒌𝒂𝒊 ( a “girls’ gathering” in Japanese) the immersive, multi-day workshop aimed to boost confidence through interactive discussions with female leaders working in the #nuclear sector in Japan, Korea, United States and United Arab Emirates who shared inspiring stories about their experiences, career paths and personal and professional challenges overcome along the way. This was the sixth such workshop organised in co-operation with Japan’s Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation (NDF) and its president Dr Hajimu Yamana. This workshop also featured guest speeches from leading figures in the Japanese nuclear sector, academia and the NEA, as well as Shiro Izawa, Mayor of Futaba town. The event included a poster session with young Japanese female researchers who presented their academic work and shed light on their research in #STEM. A visit to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant provided the students an opportunity to learn more about the decommissioning of the site and efforts to reconstruct the area affected by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. With 8️⃣ editions held in Japan, hundreds of workshop “graduates”, and countless mentor-mentee connections made, the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency's mentoring workshops contribute to ensuring the diverse and gender-balanced workforce needed for the country’s nuclear sector. #NEAMentoringWorkshop

Back to where our mentoring workshop initiative started – Japan. Last weekend we concluded another successful NEA International Mentoring Workshop in the Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. This year’s 𝑱𝒐𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒌𝒂𝒊 (“all-female gathering” in Japanese) was the sixth workshop held in Fukushima and the eighth in the country. We are proud to have partnered with Japan’s Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation (NDF) to gather 43 secondary school students from Fukushima - and 4 high school students from Illinois who were sponsored generously by the US power company Constellation.   Over the course of three days, the students interacted with highly accomplished and inspiring female STEM leaders from Japan, Korea, the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Acting as mentors to the students, they truly were the core of the workshop engaging with and encouraging the generation that will help shape the future. My thanks go to a tremendous leader and role model, Hajimu Yamana, President of the NDF, who together with his team has over the years been making this workshop a life-changing experience for hundreds of female students in Fukushima. I am also grateful to all the guest speakers, young female researchers, the supporting and organising teams, and most importantly, to the inspiring group of female mentors. Led by Fiona Rayment OBE FREng, President of the Nuclear Institute, United Kingdom, and Kimiko Murofushi, Professor Emeritus, Ochanomizu University, they included: Kanako Abe, TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Building and Construction Technology Group SARA RASHAD ALSAADI, Nuclear Safety Director, Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation Yeonhee Hah, Vice President for Global Activities, Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety Carolyne Joseph, Site Vice President, Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Illinois, United States Kock Andrea, Deputy Office Director, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR), US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Narie Sasaki, Specially Appointed Associate Professor, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo Keiko Tagami, Group Leader of Radioecology and Biosphere Research Group in National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology (QST) Miyoko Watanabe, Deputy Co-Chair of the workshop and Executive Director, Nihon University #NEAMentoringWorkshop
