In today's complex world, setting priorities is crucial for managers, as highlighted by Abraham Lincoln's quote, "If we could first know where we are and where we are going, we could better decide what to do and how to do it." The 1980s saw economic growth and demand exceeding supply, but the 1992 recession shifted priorities to cost-cutting and layoffs. The internet and globalization later brought hopes for new growth strategies. However, the 2008 recession refocused efforts on cost optimization and digital transformation. COVID-19 and global conflicts further reshuffled priorities, leading to an emphasis on supply chain management and energy costs. The lockdowns also spurred a push for better work-life balance, prompting companies to offer more benefits and flexible work arrangements. As companies navigate these complexities, they seek #leaders who can prioritize effectively, especially with the advent of AI. The focus now is on finding managers with intellectual flexibility and imagination to harness new technologies, driving passion and innovation in the workplace. People at the Centre: Myth or Reality? In this article recently published by Edizioni ESTE on "Sviluppo & Organizzazione”, our colleagues in Milan: Stoiber Monika, Simonetta Cavasin and Paola Valassina, analysed what it means today to 'put people at the centre' -a well-known principle that has gained traction since the pandemic, driven by the increasing recognition that people are genuine stakeholders, essential for ensuring an organization’s long-term sustainability. They addressed this topic with some #ChiefPeopleOfficers, engaging through both a structured survey and ongoing dialogue. Their reflections revolve around three fundamental pillars of human resource management: knowledge, listening, and participation. Chief People Officers face complex challenges such as #Diversity, #Equity & #Inclusion, organizational fluidity, and the evolution of leadership models. Technology and #sustainability profoundly influence people’s management. The ability to manage change requires strategic vision, implementation skills, and inclusivity. The challenges emerging from this dialogue are complex and multifaceted, requiring those responsible for guiding and facilitating transformation to have strategic vision, implementation capabilities, and the ability to create an inclusive context where people are real agents of change. These are skills that define a manager profile capable of balancing short-term needs with medium-term perspectives, adept at managing constant uncertainty, and increasingly sophisticated in outlining future scenarios. These characteristics, for those of us engaged in the study and development of leadership models, represent key aspects for defining ‘future-proof leadership’ and identifying people who can be virtuous interpreters of this time.
