Total Chaos
If survival horror is a genre your into this one is a must play. A dark game that touches on strong themes... A survival horror set on a remote island known as Fort Oasis. The island was once run by a community of coal miners which one day suddenly disappeared, leaving behind the abandoned concrete jungle to waste away.

Something, clearly, has gone very wrong with this place. Upon your arrival at Fort Oasis, you receive a strange radio transmission. Someone wants to he found. The further you travel into the concrete jungle, the more the situation ends up unravelling, and where you were heading is no longer clear. Find letters scattered around the world and uncover the mystery of what happened...

I've completed the game a while back. The atmosphere is deeply imersive, plays like horror should nor a pushover, yet is challenging in a good way. It pays to explore as pickups are meagre, the letters are important and pick your fights wisely. TBH Total Chaos spanks many paid releases in the genre and designed by someone who understands survival horror at it's core

For those that want a crack at Total Chaos it's free on ModDB here running on the included GZDoom source port. The game is the vision of a single dev. Comes fully packed for Windows as a finished product and can be played on 64bit & Apple Silicon Mac's with a little copy & paste of files.

FWIW the dev also produced the very successful Turbo Overkill and is now working on a paid release of Total Chaos on Steam with updated game engine & graphics.

Pulled from another thread, because I don’t care for it:

I mostly only play single player, so I play at my leisure. If a game becomes a chore it defeats its purpose, I play what appeals to me. I dont care about the trends and certainly have zero interest in games as a service...

As for Thailand it comes well recomended 😄

For coop, I’m primarily playing World of Warships although I broke out my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and am prepping War Thunder to so some flight swimming with my son. This type of PVP is now my preferred because it requires minimal commitment, although with WoW I’m virtually playing every night for different lengths of time. The important thing is that my presence is not required, nor is coop with people I know. I notice that when I play solo on a team of 15 strangers (15v15) my win rate seems to be better. I’m suspicious of WarcGaming’s Match Maker software, it’s not random chance on how teams are created, but based on a variety of stats. Plus it seems to place divisions of coop players into tougher matches. Maybe I’m imaging this.

For RPGs I’m solidly solo, no more MMORPGs for me, done dealing with tourists polluting the game world or queues to enter the dungeon. On occasion I’ll do coop on a private server, recently played Grounded on a hosted server with 2 other players, not so bad, but for the serious RPGs, I prefer it to be my world. And for repeats like Fallout 4, I’m familiar with all the quests, but I can enjoy the experience multiple times, like watching a good movie over and over. 😊

I haven't finished Redfall ... but after killing the first vampire god and totally finishing all main and neighborhood quests in the first area ... you get rewarded with the ability to basically do the same thing in a new area. Ugh, no thanks. So I got about 40 hours out of it - so that comes out to about $0.25/hour and a good overall deal!

Picked up Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak on Steam, which just came out and for me is a new chapter. I picked up the first Legend of Heroes (A Tear of Vermillion) in 2005 for the PSP and the 2006/7 follow-ups (apparently out of order) and then the Trails in the Sky games between the PSP and PS Vita, then the Cold Steel games on the Vita then the Switch and then the follow-ups also on the Switch (Zero, Azure, Reverie). This is my first one on Steam - and playing on Steam Deck. The graphics ... really don't need the Deck as the Switch handles the graphics fine. The gameplay is slightly different on this one and I really love it. Excited to keep playing.

Having another go at Total Chaos on the M1 Mac, is akin to pushing a drunken donkey up a steep hill that was towing an 18 wheeler with half a dozen flat tyres...LOL

Game runs and looks great, but it hitches and that bug's me a lot. Everything that would work on an Intel Mac or even a PC just doesn't on Apple Silicon. Web is of no help as I'm probably the only idiot trying to do this.

Getting closer :) Tried multiple variations of the game engine and how many permutations of settings, I've lost count. The hitching is still present, but vastly reduced so on the right path. Is way counter intuitive, then again I strongly suspect trying to run a game on an OS it was never designed for. On a completely different HW platform may have something to do with it... That said Total Chaos is running on Apple Silicon natively :)

Just need to kill the hitching and will be gold, feel I'm close but man am I tired of seeing GZDoom's settings 😵‍💫

One of the best dungeon crawlers ever produced. The graphics wont thrill, the gameplay will. I wish those that dare to quest all the best. The challenges are many, the trials turbulent, a very few will prevail...

Beat Dungeon Master on the Amiga back in the day. Sadly I never could get my hands on Chaos Strikes Back...

They are both pretty much open source these days. This should put you on the right path.

Dungeon Master was a fairly hard game in the day as no YT walkthroughs etc. Chaos Strikes Back started off as just an expansion, however bloomed into it's own game rightfully so. Chaos Strikes Back was and remains to be a very challenging game. I still think gameplay wise is still the best grid style dungeon crawler if looking for that challenge, maps are both fiendish & spectacular. I have Chaos Strikes Back once again thx to the source port Return to Chaos, which plays to all extents the same as the original.

That or pickup Legend of Grimrock and DL the Dungeon Master & Chaos Strikes Back custom maps from Nexus Mods.

Trying Uncharted 4 on PC. It so reminds me of Tomb Raider, and I have been playing those since the first ever release.

I did try Assassins Creed Valhalla, but, it just wasn't fun to me. I do find it weird that I don't love the big games, like, Elden Ring, Assassins Creed (all the variations), Destiny and such.

I'm tempted to try Uncharted. I need to try to watch the movie again.

I bought on sale and then refunded Nier Automata (PC) on Steam. It looked good, high positive reviews, listed as an RPG, it was on sale, good frantic action, I played it for 80 minutes, got to a boss, got killed and the game started over at the beginning?? Is this “rogue like“ or “dark souls” like?

No FREAKING way. Apparently you have to get though the first mission before you reach a place where you can save. It seemed a bit primitive as an RPG, more of an action melee/shooter, but it was not fun enough to slog through such a giant slice of the game and not offer a save. That's not for me, I have my limits on how much grind a developer can dictate to me. Ok, it was only $15...but still, it's the principle. :) I had even download some mods for it, a texture pack, a fancy sword, a nice battle dress that did not work... pfft :(

My daughter plays Nier Automata, she's a ranked player on Rainbow Six and say's it's a challenging game. I've watched her play not easy by any means. Hard to progress and harder to finish, Kind of like Dark Souls type games your either in or your out...

If your into this style of game it will be rewarding to progress. If not it's just not for you, equally such game styles have there place. I personally like Radiophobia 3, however I wouldn't recomend to someone new to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe as it's a game focused on combat realism and immersion and could be frustrating in the extreme to the new player. To the seasoned player a wild ride that offers adventure way beyond the paid titles...

  • My PC crapped out on me (motherboard) the end of June. It took me 10 days to recover, new motherboard, consequently new cpu, menory, and cooler. I learned that backing up important game saves is a must, I had some until I accidentally wiped one of my hard drives, oops 😳, see my “Your Computer” thread in this forum.
  • Fallout 4- Playing this via GOG, even though it says it does, I’m not sure it keeps copies of saves. I had some backed up in any case.
  • Skyrim- This I had set aside with the intent on returning to it. I may or may not have saved saves for this.
  • Nier Automata- Puchased and refunded because of a wonky save system, “rogue like”, “souls like”? Listed as a RPG, it does not feel like an RPG but an action shooter. The action was decent.
  • Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor- This has been been in my library for years, purchased on sale, I resisted because when I think of Modor, I picture a perpetually dark hell hole, and I was thinking I was playing on the side of Sauron, but that’s not the case at all. It’s good, combat is fun, challenging, and your not on Sauron’s side. 🙂

Maybe. 😳 The game itself was not lost. I’ve got a huge patch to apply to it. I’m going to assume saves are still there, and you can probably tell I’ve cooled to it. The magic combat is great, Hogwarts is great, but the routine is wearing on me. I don’t feel like I’m part of Hogwarts, it‘s the lack of social contacts, although there are some and some classes, logically I know that a game built on going to classes would not fly.

I canceled my Netflix subscription when I saw how much I was paying a month vs how much I actually watch on Netflix, which is close to zero. I relegated that monthly fee to Ubisoft Premium to try out some games there. Started playing Assassins Creed Mirage. I used to be a huge fan of the series from the beginning to Ezio. After Black Flag it has all been pretty down hill from there. Mirage is pretty bland for a world, only a few hours in though so maybe it gets better. Dialogue is just awful and really kills the immersion. Red Dead 2 killed open world games for me as that game is literally perfect in my eyes, especially when it comes to voice active and interactions seeming fluid and life life. I don't get that same believability from the voice actors and the characters. Trying out the latest Far Cry as well, not sure how I feel on that one yet. I will try out the open world Star Wars game that is coming out end of next month. Hoping it is a least fun, but again I just don't have faith in people doing open world games outside of Rock Star. They put the time and money into these worlds that makes them playable for years and years after. It is pretty cool to be able to play console level games on an iPad or iPhone plugged into a larger screen with my PS4 controller!

I wish RDR2 had more social interaction. I like friends and romance in the game setting.

They really dropped the ball with online play. No radar, no text chat, makes the game with such a big map seem very isolated. Outside of the silliness of GTA online, wish they just implemented the same thing basically. Also they picked the most boring things to do for the various positions you play. Should have been more focused on bank robberies and train robberies.

When I was active in a gaming guild, I‘d rendezvous with others to play this (RDR2) online. Bounty hunting and escort missions could be fun, and overall, the routine was not enough to sustain itself. And solo, it’s just a meaningless grind. The best aspect of this game is the solo story, but it lacks the social interaction that draws me in. When I played it solo, I did not finish it and I‘ve thought about returning to give it another shot.
