About us
SeaMark is a four-year project funded by Horizon Europe under contract no. 101060379. The project started on July 1, 2022. A consortium led by Ocean Rainforest comprising 25 international, cross-disciplinary partners has been awarded a prestigious €9 million Horizon Europe grant to upscale seaweed production and market applications across Europe. SeaMark will utilise recent ground-breaking selective breeding technologies within EU seaweed crop genetics to increase biomass yield. SeaMark aims to upscale circular ocean seaweed cultivation and land-based integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems and develop novel processing methods involving fermentation and biotransformation into twelve innovative seaweed-based products. The entire value chain will be analysed for techno-economic feasibility and socio-economic impact. SeaMark will also identify and quantify ecosystem services provided by seaweed cultivation. This will feed into a strategic development plan for upscaling seaweed production, and addressing the carrying capacity of seaweed cultivation in Europe. Due to the need to build more resilient food systems and decrease reliance on fossil-based products, it is necessary to grow the blue bio-economy through seaweed cultivation and product innovation. SeaMark will help fulfil the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (3, 8, 9, 12, 13 & 14) by developing this industry and, simultaneously, providing a positive impact on people and the planet.

🤩 Amazing developments from ULTFARMS taking one step forward to making it possible to cultivate #Ulva at #windfarms in the #BalticSea. 🌊 💙 Also, take a look at the findings from the ecosystem assessments that "indicates a positive response from the local ecosystem. [...] The design appears to be hashtag beneficial for local flora and fauna, particularly juvenile fish populations, underscoring its potential to provide valuable ecosystem services." #multiuse #sustainableaquaculture #lowtrophic
🌊 Exciting Update from our #FINO2 German pilot! 🌊 #ULTFARMS is pleased to announce a significant advancement at our #FINO2 #German pilot site in the #BalticSea. 🙌🏻A modular, multi-purpose system for cultivating the green macroalgae, Ulva, has successfully installed at the research platform #FINO2. 👉🏻This milestone involved seeding two systems with juvenile #Ulva, marking a critical step in demonstrating the technical feasibility and biological suitability of our #innovative #design for #algaecultivation. 🙌🏻The collaboration with the University of Gothenburg has been essential in this endeavor, where local #algaestrains were analyzed and scaled up for aquaculture applications. 👉🏻Simultaneously, we have evaluated the performance of our "nature-inclusive-design" installation. Preliminary data, collected through an #underwater camera setup, indicates a positive response from the local ecosystem. 👉🏻The design appears to be #beneficial for local #flora and #fauna, particularly #juvenilefish populations, underscoring its potential to provide valuable ecosystem services. 👉🏻ℹ️For an in-depth look at this achievement and future updates, please check our website:https://lnkd.in/d8e9RXA8 Mission Ocean CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency CIMA Research Foundation Deltares Tim Staufenberger SeaMark

🌊 Are you interested in learning about #ocean #multiuse? 👩🎓 The project OREskills has compiled results from projects like OLAMUR , H2020United, ULTFARMS, MULTI-FRAME and MUSES to create a #MOOC with the focus on ocean multi-use, including a course section on #seaweed. 🌬 🌿 In SeaMark, Vattenfall will together with Nofima and SIRPUTIS look at the potentials of upscaled integrated seaweed cultivations in off-shore wind parks, and evaluate the feasibility. Vattenfall is also part of the OLAMUR project, which has shown that off-shore cultivations can be a key enabler to reach global #sustainability goals. 🤔 Not convinced? The courses are completely #free, so there is nothing to loose! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dAmHPfPW P.S. It is full action in SeaMark right now! 🌊 Sophie Koch at Blue Resource / Sjókovin is out in the waves of the #Faroes with the team from Ocean Rainforest, collecting samples for the #environmentalassessments done in the project. 🐚 🐡 🦀 We want to better understand how #seaweed cultivations impact #biodiversity, and what the #carbon pathways connected to the farms look like. 📋 This knowledge is key for the market strategies of the products we develop, as you can see in the article on green claims: https://lnkd.in/dxMTjyRk

Did you miss the SUBMARINER Network for Blue Growth EEIG Working Group meeting on Green Claims last week? 👇 Read our summary and take-aways in the link below! You can also watch the seminar if you are interested to also hear some examples from German law on the matter, and a more elaborate explanation of #LCA limitations.
Working Group Meeting on the Green Claims Directive

😱 Did you know that 53% of claims about "green" products are vague, misleading or state unfounded #environmental information? And 40% are unsubstantiated, meaning there is no #science to back it up? 🏛 This is why the commission has proposed a #GreenClaimsDirective, with the goal to protect consumers from #misinformation and unfair marketing. 💚 But how does this affect the industry, and could it actually be an advantage for products that really are and #sustainable? 🌊 🌱 SeaMark joined the working group meeting hosted by SUBMARINER Network for Blue Growth EEIG to talk about the Green Claims, and Morten Heide from Nofima talked about the use of #sustainability in go-to-market strategies for #seaweed products. There were some great insights given and we will soon share a summary of the meeting, and the video will be available in our training platform at www.seamark.eu !
