How can we accelerate the recycling of packaging materials? This key question was at the core of Huhtamaki’s panel discussion at SuomiAreena societal discussion festival in Pori, Finland, in late June.  Here are some key takeaways from the discussion 👇 ✔️Convenience is key: Enhancing collection requires easily accessible recycling points that are close to consumers' daily routes. ✔️Clear instructions and labeling: Proper guidance is essential to help consumers sort packaging correctly after use. ✔️Innovation in design and technology: By simplifying materials and developing recycling technologies, we can enable efficient recycling and reuse of a broader range of materials. ✔️Collaboration: The whole value chain needs to work together to build functioning circular systems. An independent survey highlights consumers evolving expectations and willingness to pay extra for sustainable packaging with over 65s leading the way. A majority of respondents expressed a desire to see more fiber-based materials used in packaging, while half of them want to increase the use of recyclable plastic. However, the survey commissioned by Huhtamaki, also highlighted the need for more transparency, information, and clear instructions regarding recycling, especially when it comes to eating out. We’re thrilled to have been included in TIME Magazine’s World’s Most Sustainable Companies 2024 list. TIME and data firm Statista have created a rigorous methodology with which to measure the world’s most sustainable companies for 2024. “In 2023, we saw good performance on our sustainability ambitions. We took a significant step forward in our renewable electricity consumption to over 41% and achieved a 26% Scope 1 and 2 emission reduction compared to the base year 2019. In addition, we were able to shift our materials KPIs towards the 2030 ambitions and we made operational improvements that resulted in increased waste recycling rates.
