Levon Biss

British photographer Levon Biss works in close collaboration with leading museums around the world to bring their hidden collections to a global audience in order to entertain and educate the public on the subject of natural history. His photography has been exhibited globally and his prints are housed in numerous museum and private collections. Levon has published four books and his photographs have been featured on the covers of international titles such as Time magazine and the New York Times.

Levon’s photographic process captures the finest of details, and his images are displayed as large format prints that provide the audience with a unique visual experience. Photographs in Extinct and Endangered are created from over 10,000 individual images using a bespoke camera system and microscope objectives, with the final artworks revealing intricate details normally hidden from the human eye. The clarity in these photographs allows the viewer to closely study these beautiful insects and encourage a new level of respect and understanding of the tiny creatures with whom we share the planet. Levon’s photography and TED talks have been viewed by millions and his work has been described as a beautiful marriage of art and science.

Extinct & Endangered is the culmination of three years’ work in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History. Photographed in his studio in the UK, the insects were selected for their conservation status, with many critically endangered and some already extinct. The project aims to educate the public on the current crisis in insect decline and biodiversity loss, and to inspire future generations on the beauty and importance of the insect world.
