CBD Hemp: Research, Production, Harvest, and Processing

Industrial hemp is reported to have hundreds, if not thousands of uses. Penn State Extension educators spend some time with growers on their farms looking at hemp growing for CBD extraction.

Hemp is a plant with a long history and deep roots here in Pennsylvania and around the world. It was a staple crop in colonial times which provided food, animal feed, and fiber to the developing country. The seeds are very nutritious, high in protein and healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They can be ground into flours and meals, and the oils can be extracted for cooking and other uses. The meal can be fed to poultry and livestock (currently not FDA approved); while the exceptionally strong natural fibers can be used as textiles, papers, to reinforce building materials, and to lighten and strengthen fiberglass. In fact, some claim that the potential uses are almost limitless.

Hemp for CBD extraction is a new use for this old plant which has many potential health benefits. CBD is short for cannabidiol which is a family of compounds which are produced in the hemp buds and leaves. The CBD compounds can be used in tinctures, teas, creams, oils, and other products. Hemp for CBD use does not have any (less than 0.3%) THC which is the active ingredient in marijuana. Only medical marijuana, under care of a physician, is legal in Pennsylvania.

Penn State Extension has been researching the three main types (grain, fiber, and CBD) of hemp since industrial hemp became legal in 2018. We have been working with local growers and doing replicated research trials at the university farms near State College and the research farm (SEAREC) in Manheim, Lancaster County.

Our goal is to assist and advise growers in the production, harvest, and processing of this new crop. Hemp has many potential markets, but also many risks and unknowns. To give interested persons an introduction to the local CBD industry, we have put together a series of four short videos shot on local farms featuring extension educators and growers to help you get a "feel" for this new crop.
