Arrival trailer: Amy Adams talks to aliens

Last week, we met the linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) in the unsettling first teaser trailer for Arrival. While that teaser was fairly cryptic, we’ve now made contact with the full-length trailer, revealing a first look at the extraterrestrial visitors of Arrival.

Sicario’s Denis Villeneuve directs the sci-fi drama, which picks up when a mysterious fleet of spacecraft touch down all around the world. The government assembles a task force to address the crisis, including Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker, and it’s up to Adams’ Louise to make contact with these mysterious aliens — and figure out what they want.

While the first teaser trailer cuts out right before Louise actually makes contact, this one gives us a short glimpse of the aliens themselves — is that a hand? a mouth? a tentacle? — as Louise tries to decipher their language. To make matters worse, Russian soldiers have attacked and killed one of the aliens, which means Louise only has a short time to establish communication before the visitors declare an all-out war on Earth.

“We need to make sure they understand the difference between a weapon and a tool,” Louise says. “Language is messy, and sometimes one can be both.”

Arrival hits theaters on Nov. 11.
