Deregistering your residence

Some EU countries require you to inform the authorities if you plan to leave the country permanently (or for a long period). In some EU countries, you may have to complete this procedure in person, in others it may be possible to do it by post or online.

As part of the process, you may be required to hand over your residence documents and those of your family, if applicable. The authorities might suspend your registration as a resident or delete you permanently from the population register.

Some countries’ authorities will notify the relevant government departments of your deregistration (for example, the tax authorities, car registration authorities) while others require you to contact each department individually.

To find more information on deregistering your residence (where relevant) in an EU country, check the website of the national authorities below.
