Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for ATOMAI Project, an Iron Ore mining operation and Pelletization Plant in Mauritania for The Mauritanian Saudi Metals and Steel Company (TAKAMUL) Takamul has conducted a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) Study of the Atomai Iron Ore Mine in Zourate, northern Mauritania, under joint venture agreement between Saudi company HADEED, and the Mauritanian National Company for Industry and Mining, SNIM. The technical study reveals a reserve of more than 500 million tons of iron ore, with a potential to be increased up to a billion tons. The ultimate aim of the project is to produce 10 Mtpy of a High-Grade Direct Reduction (HGDR) Iron Pellets from magnetite ore containing 35-37% Fe for the company’s plants in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and export any surplus to targeted markets. The mine will be of the open-pit type, using conventional mining methods, and expected to come into production in the year 2029. The processing of the ore has been designed to be divided into two plants: A dry and a wet beneficiation plant located at the Atomai site with a capacity to process 25-28 Mtpy of mine material and pelletizing plant located in the south of the Nouadhibou peninsula, west of the SNIM Port. The two plants will be linked by an existing 640 km railway, property of SNIM. IDOM has carried out the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and the update of the Bankable Feasibility Study and JORC Report of the Atomai Project. The FEED comprehends the design of the mine pit, mine infrastructure, dry and wet beneficiation plants, pelletizing plant, power generation, water supply, roads and railways link, mining camp and any other facilities and services required for the Project at Zouerat and Nouadhibou locations. IDOM has also performed some additional studies like logistics, market, environmental, review and financial analysis of the project. Escuderías hay unas cuantas más… Hablando de Fórmula 1, así comenzó su discurso Sara Gómez, directora del programa Mujer e Ingeniería de la Real Academia de Ingeniería, durante el acto celebrado con motivo del X Día Internacional de la Mujer en la Ingeniería, en el Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades. “A estas y a todas las mujeres inspiradoras hay que ponerlas como ejemplo”, decía, “hasta que lleguen a todas las niñas y jóvenes para que, a la velocidad de la Fórmula 1, opten por hacerse ingenieras”. En IDOM no podemos estar más de acuerdo. Por eso apoyamos el talento femenino participando en todo tipo de iniciativas desarrolladas por la RAI y otras entidades, con el objeto de animar a las jóvenes a elegir la profesión que quieran, sin miedo. La actividad central del acto fue una mesa redonda que reunió a 4 jóvenes ingenieras (entre ellas, nuestra compañera Cecilia López-Cotarelo) moderadas por Dolores Sanz González, también compañera y muy activa en iniciativas como el Mentoring de excelencia o el proyecto Mujer e ingeniería va a tu centro”.

Decarbonising refineries We are witnessing a revolution in the energy industry. The transformation of refineries to a sustainable future is not just a vision, it is an ongoing reality.   Juan Carlos Latasa López, Chief Technology Officer at IDOM Oil & Gas, offers an insightful perspective in his article exploring the transition of refineries from their traditional role as producers of fossil fuels to their potential as innovative centers for the production of advanced and sustainable fuels.   This hybrid model combines existing facilities with carbon capture, green hydrogen generation and synthetic fuel production. Future of water meets in Copenhagen We are pleased to announce our participation in the first European Young Water Professionals (YWP) conference in Copenhagen, where young people from all over Europe gathered with a common goal: WATER.   Our colleagues David Seelmann and María Cano Mansanet presented the "El Hierro Hydro-Wind Power Plant", a project that combines a hydropower plant with 4 Pelton turbines, a wind farm with 5 wind turbines and a desalination plant. In 2023, the project achieved 28 consecutive days of energy self-sufficiency and 50% of the annual supply of the island of El Hierro.   Participants also explored Copenhagen's urban adaptation to climate change through technical tours. The mentoring program with the NGO Fundación FdF is advancing In February, we launched the mentoring program for IDOM employees. The program's goal is to support young people in Colombia. For a month, the mentors prepared their programs. The Foundation provided ongoing guidance. The commitment of the students is highlighted by the 8 volunteers who meet weekly to teach English, entrepreneurship, drawing and math. In addition to mentoring, the goal of this project was the installation of Internet access points in remote areas. Zaragoza's railway network remodeled by IDOM IDOM signed a major contract for the modernization of Zaragoza's railway network with the Ministerio de Transportes y Movilidad Sostenible on June 7. This project is funded by the Connecting Europe Facility 2022. It is part of the 2030 Strategy for Sustainable, Safe and Connected Mobility.
