[edit]Calque of Latin Mare Mortuus, under influence from Byzantine Greek Νεκρά Θάλασσα (Nekrá Thálassa, “Nekrá Thálassa”) and Arabic اَلْبَحْر الْمَيِّت (al-baḥr al-mayyit).
