Hello, Bryan! Thank you for joining WikiProject Middle-earth and contributing to improve Tolkien-related articles. We are glad to have you join in the effort! Here're some good links and subpages related to our WikiProject.

If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask on our talk page. Thank you for your contributions and have fun editing! —Mirlen 00:47, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update

[edit]

There is a poll/proposal concerning the renaming of our WikiProject. Please vote here to share your opinion! —Mirlen 19:34, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you only voted for your top choice. I think it would be benifical if you placed your rankings for all 3 (in case there is a tie or something). Ted87 03:27, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have make extensive changes to our Lord of the Rings article in an attempt to work it up to Featured Article status. In order to find more suggestions I have listed it under Wikipedia:Peer Review. Under the guidelines to nominations I am required to notify others of knowledge in the area to review it. I have decided that the best group for this would be our WikiProject. So I ask you all to look at the article and make any suggestions you can. Hopefully we will be voting this FA soon enough. SorryGuy 00:52, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Masked Bandit

[edit]

If i took off the mask i could be anyone, maybe even Bush or a Pikachu. But never the less, yes i am Leyasu, everyone knows it, and most people just dont care. The only ones who have a problem with me are ones who have been banned over and over again, dragged through abirrition, run sock farms, and generally far more a problem than me not using a proper handle.

Thats why virtually nobody cares. And thats also virtually why when left alone to get on with things i can actually do things that are helpfull instead of having to spend time dealing with constant abuse. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.153.143.33 (talk) 15:36, 9 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Kurdistan

[edit]

Hi, and thank you for the message at my talk page.

It is indeed a relevant question which articles should be under the category. My immediate answer would be any entity and subcategory related to the region of Kurdistan. However, for now I find it very important to counter attempts to simply empty the category. The category has previously had some quite open opposition. One user listed the entire category for deletion, see the debate at Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_March_3#Category:Kurdistan. When it seemed clear that there was a vast majority for keeping the category, the same user stated : This vote means little to me. It is inflated to begin with. No other category vote has this many votes. Also there is a pov infestation. I am not accusing anyone of anything but I find it odd that the majority of the keep votes came from Kurds and Greeks. So no I dont care about this vote at all. I have no reason to keep nonsense like this on wikipedia, I will eventualy get it deleted, watch me. --Cool CatTalk|@ 11:48, 10 March 2006 (UTC). Such explicit attempts to obstruct a decision taken after a debate must be countered, and I believe all Wikipedians do have a responsibility in implementing decisions.

May I suggest a more general discussion at Category_talk:Kurdistan, and in the meantime keeping an eye on the related articles. Cheers. Bertilvidet 13:23, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Too bad, there's no replies back from the administrator. The images are really important for the FA Mount Tambora article. Without them, it is just useless. However, I have asked the administrator (I still have his email), but I didn't explicitly ask about free usage other than Wikipedia. What do you think? If you think those images are not appropriate in Commons and to be deleted, then I will re-uploaded some of them as fair-use images in Wikipedia. — Indon (reply) — 09:28, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. I will wait until the images are deleted, then re-uploaded in Wikipedia with the same names. — Indon (reply) — 10:42, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Mortallove promo.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Mortallove promo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 14:43, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heavy duty SQL query request

[edit]

I have a computationally expensive SQL query request. I'd like to have a list of english Wikipedia users by number of articles they have started. Someone "started" an article if they make the first non-redirect edit to the article. Since you did my last one, can you do this one, or point me to someone who can? PanchoHardy

[edit]

Thanks for your aid, however I just felt that it needs noting he has a fir few legitamite uploads that are transwiki'd from the en wikipedia to commons are they are in fact true free use images. The copyvios are (effectively) all the images just labelled "self-made" with "PanchoHardy" as the author. Although there are several that are probably not copyios and may in fact be real free use images ([3], [4] and [5]) they will probably have to be deleted as well considering the sheer magnitude of copyvios this user has uploaded. –– Lid(Talk) 22:49, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of Free Music

[edit]

Hi Bryan. User:Raul654 suggested I drop you a note, inviting you to join a discussion at the Wikimedia Village Pump. Some technical stuff is being suggested there, and perhaps you can offer some advice as to feasability. Thanks.Ferrylodge (talk) 16:38, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bryan. Thanks very much for making a new music tool for us! A couple comments.... Currently there's 50 search results per page, max. How about 500? Also, the ability to output in wikitext would be useful. Additionally, I put "CC-BY-SA-3.0" into the "not in category" box, but the first hit was in that category. Maybe it's not working yet?Ferrylodge (talk) 17:52, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the message; had some capitalization problems. Fixed now. -- Bryan (talk|commons) 18:20, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Limit is now 100. The database queries are quite extensive, I need to look into optimization first before I can enable larger limits. Alternative output may follow later. -- Bryan (talk|commons) 18:23, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for boosting the limit. There still seems to be a glitch, though. When I put "CC-BY-SA-3.0" into the "not in category" box, the first of the twenty hits is not in that category, but then when I ask for 100 hits the first one is CC-BY-SA-3.0.
Also, Raul would like to know: "How do we enter multiple terms in the In category / Not in category fields? Specifically, I was trying to find oggs with 'Beethoven' in the title which are not in any of the following categories: Ludwig van Beethoven, Piano sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven, Violin sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven."Ferrylodge (talk) 18:42, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You can't ask multiple categories yet. I will add support for more in-categories probably tomorrow. The not-in-category stuff needs more debugging and performance optimization first. But maybe I can make a in-subcategories something. -- Bryan (talk|commons) 19:29, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As for the not-in category thingy, I think it is a problem with caching, because I can't reproduce the problem. -- Bryan (talk|commons) 19:36, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's odd. The first of the 100 results I get is (Ne)mrtav_čovek_(Elektrolasta).ogg which is in the category CC-BY-SA-3.0. I refresh and still get this same problem. Must be gremlins.  :)Ferrylodge (talk) 19:49, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(undent)Hi Bryan. Regarding your excellent new ogg search tool, a couple people have asked whether it might be possible to get only oggs that have been uploaded after a particular date, or to organize the search results by upload date. Would you be able to add this feature to the new ogg search tool, please?Ferrylodge (talk) 17:33, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Filtering by upload date should certainly be possible. I'll look into it tonight or tomorrow. Ordering by upload date is too much a performance hit I think. -- Bryan (talk|commons) 21:23, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Works now. -- Bryan (talk|commons) 09:45, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. :-)Ferrylodge (talk) 15:31, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I tried the category exclusion feature out for the first time - SPLAT! Raul654 (talk) 17:36, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. Curious though... I wonder which browser you use? Your browser added a line ending to the category field... -- Bryan (talk|commons) 21:21, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have one more request where the ogg search is concerned - would it be possible to exclude results appearing on a particular page? In particular, it would make my job substantially easier if I could automatically exclude from the results any files already appearing on wikipedia:sound/list Raul654 (talk) 05:01, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also: I've started doing my first real experimentation with the ogg search tool. I used this search, specifying a minimum of 30 seconds per file. However, this 1 second file was included in the results. Therefore, I suspect there is a bug somewhere. Raul654 (talk) 05:15, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It did not understand that you did not fill in anything in the minutes field. I fixed it. -- Bryan (talk|commons) 20:22, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I see you removed the Stream of Passion logo I've uploaded and added to the article of the band. It would be great if you could provide me a more detailed reason for doing that. Please answer me in less than seven days, because otherwise the file is going to be deleted. Thank you. Victao lopes (talk) 21:28, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see your point. I didn't find a free image, but you can do it if you can. Well, but you don't believe we need the image, so I think you won't do it. Actually, many logos are being removed from articles of bands. I think that's a pitty, considering that they don't really make such a big difference on the articles, they simply illustrate it. I'm going to request the image's deletion soon, then. Thank you, Victao lopes (talk) 23:31, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion, a logo is very different from an image with band members, but it's OK...since there seems to be no way of requesting my image's deletion, I'll just wait until March 13 for it to be deleted. Thank you, Victao lopes (talk) 14:41, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Within Temptation

[edit]

I really don't understand why you keep forbidding any change on the Within Temptation page, wikipedia is made so that people can add some contents, update some pictures ... to sum up : improve the content. If we can talk about this, that would be nice. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Olarcadia (talkcontribs) 10:09, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For example, I was talking about updating a picture by a better one, or a newest, without having in mind to hurt the original picture. Another thing is that I putted a link towards a recent interview of Within Temptation, in the references part, but you removed it explaining something like "useless external link". The main goal wasn't to make publicity for a website or anything, I just know that a lot of people go on wikipedia and likes to find recents interviews of the bands. The strange thing is that there is the first wiki page that have a problem with interviews links. All the others seems to be fine with this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Olarcadia (talkcontribs) 12:52, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removing users from certain groups, from the result of the SQL query

I found this query here:

I want to use another JOIN to automatically remove all users who are a member of bot group from this list, but I can't figure how. Can you please give some advice?

PS: I'm not trying that on English Wikipedia.

Something like LEFT JOIN user_groups ON lr_user_id = ug_user AND ug_group = 'bot' WHERE ug_user IS NULL. You also need to add an rev_user AS lr_user_id in the inner select. Haven't tested, but this should work more or less. -- Bryan (talk|commons) 20:24, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
