Charles Kelley Stevenson (born on January 29, 1978) is an American computer security professional, Buddhist Geek, and hacker. In the late 20th century, he was a pioneer of techniques for exploiting Apple's MacOS and other PowerPC operating systems. [1]

Personal life

[edit]

Charles is the son of US Army Special Forces officer Major LK Stevenson and Nevada History Museum curator Deborah Stevenson. He joined the US Army Reserve Officer Training Corps ROTC after graduating from Montezuma Cortez High School in 1996 and attended Basic Training at Fort Knox, KY. Following Basic Training, he enrolled as a RAT cadet at the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) in Roswell, NM. During his time at NMMI, Charles completed the Commemorative Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sands Missle Range. His team from NMMI took first place in its division in 1998, completing the military marathon in just over 4 hours in full combat gear. He graduated with High Honors, from NMMI, in 1998 and received a commission from Congress as a Second Lieutenant (2LT) in the United States Army Reserve.

After NMMI, Charles enrolled in degree programs at Colorado State University and Fort Lewis College before accepting a position as a Software Engineer with Terra Soft Solutions as a member of the Yellow Dog Linux operating system development team. [2]

Computer hacking

[edit]

At the age of eight, Charles began to teach himself computer programming using an Apple ][e computer. He showed promise, gaining proficiency with rudimentary BASIC, Fortran, and Pascal. At the age of nine he enrolled in a college programming course in Logo at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. During the mid 1990's Charles ran a popular Doom fan website and with the release of Quake Alpha launched a website which was sponsored by Mpath Interactive (which became GameSpy). As a RAT cadet in military college he was not allowed access to telephone or Internet. Having a dumb terminal in his dorm room he began learning the ins and outs of VAX/OpenVMS hacking and soon had access to the MANAGER account. His unauthorized access was eventually discovered by the systems administrator and he was banned from all computers on campus for two years, except while under the direct supervision of a staff.

Charles became active in the Open Source Software world in the late 1990s and has contributed to a variety of projects including Yellow Dog Linux, Whitebox Linux, Tao Linux, Kicad, and Debian. He has written and released an Internet Relay Client (IRC) chat bot in Python and a crytographic file system helper script.

Buddhist Geek and Prison Dharma Volunteer

[edit]

Towards the end of his military career Charles had a change of heart and became an advocate for non-violence and developed an interest in meditation. In 2005 he joined a Buddhist Sangha in Carson City, NV. He accepted the position of Information Technology Manager at the Insight Meditation Society in June of 2006. He collaborates with volunteers from Dharma Seed to make teachings from IMS available to all. He has been active as a Prison Dharma volunteer at the North Central Correctional Institution at Gardner in Gardner, MA since 2007. During his years as a volunteer he has helped to bring the Dharma to inmates by inviting buddhist teachers Joseph Goldstein, Pascal Auclair, Leigh Brasington, Sayadaw U Vivekananda, and Claude Anshin Thomas.
