Andy Palmer[edit]

Andrew “Andy” Palmer (born June 17, 1966) is an American entrepreneur and venture capitalist based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He co-founded Vertica Systems and Tamr [1]. He founded Koa Labs, a Cambridge-based start-up space and seed fund [2].He invested in Upstart,[3] PillPack,[4] Desktop Metal, Recorded Future, and Carta.

Early Life & Education[edit]

Andy Palmer was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He attended Bowdoin College where he majored in English and History, and minored in Computer Science. While at Bowdoin, Palmer completed an independent study on artificial intelligence with Marvin Minsky. He earned his MBA from the Tuck School of Business in 1994. In 2015, the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory named Palmer as a Research Affiliate focusing on database systems.[5]

Career[edit]

In 1994, he started working as Director of Marketing at Trilogy with Joe Liemandt. Palmer then led Sales and Marketing at Trilogy spin-off, pcOrder.com and at Bowstreet. In 2000 Palmer joined Infinity Pharmaceuticals as Chief Information Officer. In Jan 2005, Palmer Co-founded Vertia Systems with Mike Stonebraker. Palmer hired Chris Lynch to replace him as CEO at Vertica which was subsequently acquired by Hewlett Packard in March 2011.

In 2012, Palmer founded Koa Labs, a seed fund based in Harvard Square. Koa Labs ran a startup space in Harvard Square for entrepreneurs and startups. Koa’s first fund included investments in PillPack, Upstart, Desktop Metal, Carta, Recorded Future, and CarePort.

In 2013, Palmer founded Tamr with Mike Stonebraker and currently serves as CEO. Tamr provides data mastering and unification through machine learning. Tamr was designed to improve data quality by reducing the time and effort required to connect, enrich, and master data sources. Tamr combines machine learning and advanced algorithms with collective human insight to identify data sources, understand relationships and curate siloed data at scale.
